OR Gas Block Removal

I've made the decision to replace my railed gas block off of my M&P OR and replace it with a low profile and 12" rail of some sort. My concerns are that something is going to go wrong. Not necessarily in the installation (but it certainly could since I don't really know what I'm getting into) but in performance after the fact. I read somewhere where a guy replaced his FSB with a UTG low profile and his gun was never cycling the same.

That's what I'm worried about. Any way to make sure that I get the same function? Any low profile gas block better than others? I hate messing with something that isn't broken but I can't stand the OR gas block and carbine length rail any more... If I had a FSB, I would just shave it down. Thanks!

As long as you line up the hole in the gas block to the hole in the barrel, your rifle will cycle fine. (assuming you've replaced the gas tube correctly) There are plenty of posts on here regarding gas block removal, etc. A search will yield more than enough info for you to get the job done right the first time.
Best of luck.

Not exactly what you're looking to do, but from the description it appears this will work on an OR without removing the gas block.

Troy BattleRail 12" MRF-CX|Battlerails|Battlesight Accessories|Battlesights|Troy Industries| | Free Float Rails

You've got me interested in this Battlerail. I just sent an email asking if this will install without gas block removal.

Correct. Not what I was asking but it WAS my first thought. I believe I checked with Troy and they said it wouldn't work. It could have been MI though. Post up when you get a response. Thanks!

After you install the new gas block, take some alcohol or something like that, I used a small syringe that we have for animals and squirted some alcohol down the gas tube and watched how freely it ran out. I think if you do something pressurized it can force it through. it is a good check though either way.

+1
It worked for me!

If it doesn't cycle properly loosen the block and re-align it til it does. It ain't that big of a deal, just be sure to take some tools to the range with you.

I know your not going to do this, but I wouldn't feel comfortable using a UTG gas block on my rifle, even the high quality manufactures lo pro gas blocks are fairly affordable. If your not totally comfortable making the swap then pay an AR smith:eek: or a friend with the correct tools and experience for the job. stick with the names you know or ask around.

Another option would be to buy/assemble another upper!

You are a correct, will not work with an OR. Got this response from Troy this AM.

"The 12” MRF CX will not work with the S&W MP15 ORC. The 12” MRF CX cut out will not fit around the railed gas block. Please let me know if you need any additional information."

Good luck with your mod.

Yankee Hill Micro is a great small gas block and seems to clear whatever handguard you put on. My Nordic 12" is a really slim profile and the YHM Micro left lots of room.
