Ordered a NEW "Classic" model 27 4" blue

I ordered a week ago a New "classic" series model 27, with a 4" barrel and blue.

I really wanted a nice to very nice 4" 27 or 28, but have not found one, so I rang my mate (who is the S&W importer into Australia) and ordered a new one, I know it will have the lock, but I really don't mind, I am not sure if im going to shoot it yet, I am still looking for a shooter 4" model 28.

Anyone else out there got one of the new "Classics" and thoughts on them, how they shoot etc, are they worth keeping NIB, or should I shoot and enjoy it.

I bought a new Model 29 Classic 6.5" in blue back in November and love it!

For me, it's too much fun to shoot to leave in the box. I didn't get the presentation case because I intended to shoot it. Obviously, it has the lock, but I don't mind it. It lives in a safe and won't be used for carry or self-defense.

As for a range report, I'm a relative novice at this. I've put about 150 rounds of mixed 44 mag/spl though it and I can say that it was very smooth and a pleasure to shoot!

I came this close to buying a Classic 27. This month's issue of Shooting Times did a side-by-side review of the gun with one of the older models and the performance was outstanding. At the last minute I got lucky and found a shooter grade 27-3 on Gunbroker at an excellent price, so that's what I bought. But for that I have no doubt I'd have purchased the Classic Model.

I have a 27-9 and the lock does not bother me at all. I wanted a 27 and found this one, no regrets!

I was under the impression that civilians in your country were no longer allowed to own handguns.

I don't know if you can equate an N-frame with a lock to a smaller gun with a lock as far as ILF's go. My two N-frames, 625-8 and 610-3 have had several thousand rounds through each and never a problem. Come to think of it, none of the shooters I compete with have ever complained of an ILF, it seems to be only present on the forum.

Armanian, what a great looking revolver with the classc lines. Would love to own one.

I have only had mine about three weeks. It still has the small grips on it (that will change when the Hogues I ordered get here). I have put 300 rounds through it and love it.

Hi Al,

No, I am not a Police officer, the laws in Australia are very restrictive but still workable if you have the time, desire and willing to jump through hoops.

You have to be a member of an approved Pistol club and attend at least 6 times a year, more if you have more pistols.

We cant have barrels shorter that 4"
We cant have mags that hold more than 10 rounds
We cant have a calibre over .38
We cant have semi auto rifles
We cant have semi auto or pump action shotguns
we cant have folding stocks

etc etc etc

There are aceptions of coasre, we can have a handgun up to .5 cal to use for western action (must be a club member) or CF sillouete (again must be active club member.

It isn't much fun, but still doable.

As for the pictures and word, thanks, I think I will shoot it, much to nice to stay in a dark safe.

I cant wait.

HOLD THE PHONE! I just had another look at the pic's posted up, this is the first time I have seen the RHS (smith only show the left in the brochures) and noticed it is a 5 screw frame, now its even better.

I am now on the hunt for some NICE stag grips to suit.

Now I really cant wait.

I believe the new 27 Classic, like the other Classics, are NOT 5 screw frames. They are four screw.

Eugene, Unless it is for concealment, why a 4" gun? I always find that the longer barrels like 6 inch are more accurate.
I have both types, and regard the 4" as holster guns and the 6" as target/competition/hunting guns. A .357 magnum in 6" length would still be legal and alot more interesting (to me, anyhow).

The barrel length is not about performance, it is about looks, I have a 6" 686-4 AFS for target stuff, this is just a gun I have always loved the look of, the N frame fits my hands, I am a reasonably solid bloke at 6' tall and 250 odd pounds, with hands to match the N frame feels right, plus the look of a 4" gun just seems right to me.

I have found a few rice 6" 27 and 28's out here for reasonable money and may get one to play with, but the look of a 4" N frame with some really nice grips does it for me.

I cant wait, 3 screw, 4screw or 5, I dont care, I want it.

Let's see now, I have the new M-21, M-22, M24 and M-25 classic's. All have nice tight lock ups and shoot real nice. The new nickel M-24 once home and looked at, the nickel was not as nice as some 30 year old nickel guns I have. As far as the IL is concerned I seem to think it is a problem with the light guns with the resultant recoil. I think and hope, the steel frame N frames are relativily safe from failure. Have fun with your new smokepole!

Well,

it has been a long time coming, due to many factors, but on Monday this week I finally picked up my New 27-9 Classic.

WOW, the blue anf grips are fantastic, the feel of the gun in hand, the whole lot, I love it.

Mate gave me a set of real early target grips he had laying around to put on as the small ones it came with dont fit me too well.

I will be shooting it tommorow, I cant wait.

While I was picking it up I saw a ANIB 6" 27-2, early number, I will own it soon, and have bought a 5" pre dash 27 this week.

I think I have a problem.

I have owned my 27-9 Classic 61/2 inch barrel for nearly a year and I can assure you won't be disappointed.
My gun has the nickel coating and the finish is superb.
I take this gun to the range almost every week and I doubt that I will ever part with it.
Good luck with your new gun and don't lock it away in the safe.
