I'm a small time Ruger revolver dealer mainly because I've always liked them, but decided recently to try a 648-2 as a varmint gun. I'm very pleased with the near perfectly consistent .224" throats, excellent lockup and timing, and even at 5.1 pounds on the single action trigger out of the box, the trigger is a proper trigger with clean break even though it's too heavy. I also just really like the weight and balance of the gun for my purposes. The double action pull is really heavy and my Lyman electronic checks out of the game at 12 pounds without even starting to break it over. I talked to Frank Glenn and by recommendation of a friend called cylinder and slide also about getting the action worked over. In the meantime, my friend who's hunted with Smiths for over 40 years said for now just get the Wolff spring kit and put the lightest trigger spring in that will still allow the gun to operate properly. Unfortunately the heaviest spring at 16# isn't quite heavy enough to function, even after getting everything properly oiled and doing some dry firing with empties turning them to new spots every time. The guys at cylinder and slide said I'd be lucky to get the double action below 10 pounds, and don't remember discussing it with Frank. I really want to get one of these running double action as well as possible for my needs, so I'm curious about what others have achieved with their 648-2 revolvers. I'm also curious as to whether there was any difference between the earlier 6 shot pre lock models and the new ones action wise. I've had a small amount of Smiths in the past, but they were all older blue guns with great actions, so I'm at a loss on this new one so far.
