The Good: Picked up the Doc, the "Commandante" and his boy on the way to the show. Whilst getting ready to roll out in front of doc's house Commandante's son says pops wants to trade his old gun for a Ruger .380. I bought said gun in the driveway on the promise to purchase said LCP at the show. Pix to follow. Lively discussion 75% Spanish, the rest unintelligible. Commandante is one of my favorites of doc's entourage. He was "somebody" in a Caribbean island army way back. Doesn't speak a word of English but passed the background check in 3 minutes. 40 years ago the CIA musta had him on the payroll.
The bad: Going into the show I noticed very few "toters." Then noticed the sign: "Absolutely no private sales at this show. If you want to sell it must be to a dealer. If you are caught not going through background check you are out and banned from future shows." I shortened it a bit. I saw zero $$$ change hands except for the hundred or so folks taking the CWP course as was Commandante's boy. A (non-FFL) tableholder and a customer were basically arguing over a deal. "Walker" was trying to trade a 8 3/8" SW 629 even for a 2 1/2" 66. Ol boy say "Can't do it!" Walker says "Lets walk out in the parking lot." 'Ol boy says "Not doing that." We kept going, negative waves. After all that we had to go to Khaled's shop in Apopka (brilliant marketing) for him to pop off his 3 rounds to complete today's part of the process. I did remark that the store had the exact same items at the exact same prices but we didn't pay $11/ea to go through the door.
The ugly: Rain blitz set in early. Driving down from Apopka was like being on a big skim board. Roads with 6 inches of water everywhere. After a prolonged dry spell the "black ice" was unforgiving to the overconfident.
About the guns: Many nice S&W revolvers at reasonable prices. New 642 and 638's for $319 which is under $350 OTD. 8 3/8 629 with the "scope notches" in the barrel $750. One guy had a Kimber Solo 9mm with laser for $459, smoking deal. I didn't get anything at the show but Commandante was thrilled with the new $206 OTD Ruger .380. I got his old gun, missing the ejector rod knob, refinished (I think) and grips cracked in 2 places repaired with Elmers. Win some, lose some. I'm still thirsty from the chili-cheese-fries. Joe

Is that a rule of the promoter? New Florida law?

Think about it. If'n you are in control you control the playing field. Added bonus is looking the hero for the news media. Local ABC and NBC affiliates had film crews inside and outside the venue. Last thing I want is my ugly mug on TV at the gunshow. I'm sure if the owner didn't want them there they'd be gone. Joe

A $206.00 Colt Detective Spl.........Me thinks you did ok on that one, cracked grips and missing ejector rod knob aside...

Mechanically it's tight, timed properly, smooth trigger pull, excellent bore. I'm sure it's been fired very little. CDNN has cocobolo smooth grips for $40, I'm out of luck on the ejector knob as none of the parts guys has them in stock at present. I used to have a machinist friend who could spin up something workable but he died several years ago. I also have an account on the Colt forum but I guess you have to be inducted into the inner circle and have the super secret password ritual to access anything meaningful. Joe

I wasn't there this weekend because I'm still recovering from heart surgery. It looks like I'll never be going back if these are the type of games they've decided to play.
Might want to think twice about that.

The people imposing these rules would like nothing better than for you (and a few thousand of your friends) to stay away. Attendance shrinks and the gunshows dwindle away and eventually die off. Just what they want to see happen.

Personally I have only bought one gun at a show and it was from an individual. We still had to do the FFL transfer because it is state law. BUT, I still go to pretty much EVERY gun show in my area - just because I want to support them and want to see them continue to thrive.

It was a very small crowd. Lunchtime on a rainy day, getting a seat much less a table in the eating tent would be difficult. We sat at least an hour after the fries waiting for Commandante jr to finish the CWP class and 3/4 of the tables were empty. Mostly because a lot of business is transacted under the tarp, previously. Joe

Seen that stuff done before. Tell 'em they can't do that then they pass a law/resolutiuon not allowing gun shows in the county. The very liberal powers that be don't care about rule of law unless it's their law it seems.

Pharmer if You know the part number I may have that ejector rod end. I have about 7000 dollars worth of Colt parts all numbered...I don't have a list of Colt part numbers though..

Apopka , eh ? I live in Oviedo and was there yesterday . I talked to one of the guys checking guns , and he said it's an Orlando ordinance . He said the NRA is suing tomorrow to get rid of it . You used to be able to get some deals from individuals . It's just not the same any more . I've been going there for at least 20 years , and rarely do I buy anything . There's a Forum member that sets up there sometimes . When you go in the big hall , he's straight ahead on the right . He's there by the guy with white hair in a pony tail . Really , I think it's gone down hill since the guy from Shoot straight bought it . I know he chased off the guy who dealt in S&W revolvers , had about 6 - 10 tables . And worse , he chased off Georgia Arms the ammo dealer . I bought a lot from them , great prices . I guess I am getting old , pretty soon I will be saying " I remember when ."
