What's the deal with the all-white marine coolers? Do they offer anything over your regular Coleman or Igloo product? Are they legal to use away from water? (Just kidding...)

They are made to double as a lifeboat.
Coleman and Igloo coolers are low-end products, substantially inferior to the better products, such as Yeti Roughneck and similar coolers. The color is irrelevant, except that there is no intelligent option other than reflective white for coolers. Here in the desert, "ice management" is imperative. High end coolers, protected from radiant (solar) heat by "Space Blankets" and assiduously shaded will hold H20 ice for 4-5 days, and, with care CO2 ice a little longer. Cheap coolers are like cheap guns --- not worth the money. Great coolers are worth more than their cost...
The price. They be some high priced coolers.

I asked that same question to the Coleman cooler rep about 20 years ago. He told me there was a couple of differences, depending on the model. For example some of the older ones had a ruler imprinted on the lid. Also the lids and sides were beefier so that they could be used as an additional seat on the boat. The older ones came with, or had cushions available to be used as a seat. And the other feature of the older ones(don't know about the newer ones), the sides and finish was smoother-not so much of the stiple finishing. That was because you got alot of blood on the coolers, and the smoother finishes were easier to clean the blood up. Also on the older ones the ice would last longer. But I do not think that is the case on the newer coolers. Or at least on some of the standard coolers ice will last a long time. Please remember this is a question that came up at a trade show in about 1988 or 1989. I sold a bunch of Coleman products, as well as Igloo products for the company I worked for. Back then the marine coolers were highly sought after. They were constructed better. Tom.

A marine cooler is just ...COOL! It tells the world that you own a boat and thus have money and high testesterone levels. It tells the world that you can function in a hostile marine enviroment, can navigate using the sun, a signal mirror and a pencil. It tells the world that you have total comand of both maritime and land enviroments It tells the world that you only buy marine grade products and not just any kind of stuff. It tells the world that you won't buy your fish, but will instead go out and catch them yourself. In short it validates that you are in fact A MAN. The Yeti's will hold ice for 8-9 days (although my wife had the temerity to remind me that my average fishing trip lasts about 6 hours). In short if you have to ask if Marine coolers are worth the extra money....that tells me you shouldn't own one.

Oh, that's when my cousin Fred through his old refrigerator in the lake. The fish hide in it and keep cool- and it's a great fish'n hole.
'Em batteries beside it give the fish that slightly acidic flavor- you know...like lemon.

Just bought one a couple of months ago at Sportsman's Warehouse for our camping ventures. Not necessarily "marine" per se, just a better quality cooler. It keeps ice 4 to 5 days easily. They do not have a drain (for better cold keeping integrity), so you have to dump them vs drain them. I use the plastic blue ice for cold so it is not a problem. A lot of "Marine" coolers are just cheapo coolers with a cushion to sit on. If the sides, bottom and lid are thin they are simply cheap water makers....just add ice and wait a little while. (o;

Adding the name "Marine" to anything means it can be sold for twice the normal price, or more.

I have two small Coleman "Marine" coolers and have been disappointed in them both. I just bought a larger Yeti and have probably bought the last cooler I'll ever need. If you were close by I'd give you both of the Coleman's.
A note about the Yeti and similar super-duty coolers --- Because they have lots more insulation and are more robustly constructed than low-end coolers, they are also significantly heavier. I find it potentially injurious to manhandle a fully loaded 45 quart Yeti Roughneck into and out of my boat while it's on the trailer, and it's a hefty load in any case. I've found it more comfortable to use two 25 quart size coolers...
