Does anyone shoot anything other than 9mm?

I shoot 9mm more then any pistol caliber as I have several thousands of reloads I made years ago. I do occasionally still shoot.45,.40 and .38 special mostly.

Like many of you guys I have many different calibers, I bought my first gun (A 22) when I was discharged from the military in 1965. Been shooting ever since. Four calibers I shoot the most are a 9 mm Beretta, a second gen 45 Colt, a Ruger 44 mag and my favorite is my Wildey 45 Win Mag, which might not be much longer, I am 80 and it is not easy for me to chamber a round, besides that a gun takes a lot of cleaning after I’m finished for the day.

I don't own a 9, and don't intend to, but I won't say never. Most of my handgun shooting is .45 ACP and .22. Some .357, and .44 Mag, which I handload to hot .44 Special level. I'm a handloader so I police up my casings.

Still carry an eclectic range of calibers to my gun club.
Revolvers are making a revival here amongst the younger generation of shooters, which is a good thing.
I always bring a 9 mm “Revolver” to evangelize those who are on the fence.
They love it’s simplicity and the fact they don’t have to police up their brass.

I shoot a lot of 9mm and 22 cal. nowadays but still get other guns out fairly often. Haven't been to a public range in years but not surprised that the OP sees a lot of 9mm brass. As to the revolver cartridges, if there is brass laying around I would suspect it was from pistol caliber rifles not handguns, a lot of the guys still shooting revolvers never let their brass hit the ground. Don't think the popularity of the 9mm is really a new thing, besides war souvenirs there were new Browning Hi-Powers, the Model 39 and the new Model 59 when I was really getting into shooting in the 70;s. Then the rise of the "wonder nine", high capacity pistol as other companies brought out new guns in the late 70's & early 80's made it a common choice for many shooters. The only setback was the "Assault Weapons Ban" under Clinton that made high cap mags hard to get for a while (and led to a resurgence in 45cal as well as encouraging the development of really small 9mm concealment guns). Once that law expired the 9mm came back in force.

Nowadays it is the cheapest centerfire caliber out there so there are likely to be far more people shooting it than any other caliber. 22 caliber guns still seem popular, they sell well in the store, lots of people like them. The OP may not be noticing them as much since they can easily become lost in a sea of 9mm brass.

I shoot 9mm only if I'm moved to shoot one of my Hi Powers. I sweep up the cases and toss them. It's cheap enough. I like revolvers. Leisurely shooting and no brass to sweep up.

I have two 9MM's a S&W M39-2 and a Beretta 92F. I never shoot them or should say rarely shoot them. Maybe once a year or so. I shoot mainly .38 Special, .357 Mag., 10MM, 45 Colt and .45 ACP.

It's important to consider the fact that many 9mm shooters are not really gun enthusiasts but rather concealed carry enthusiasts/ hobbyists. Their first and perhaps only handgun is a 9mm because it chambers a pretty good cartridge (maybe not the best) for it's intended use, comparatively cheap guns and ammo are readily available (something that can't be said for most other handgun/cartridge combinations), and 9mm recoil is tolerable for just about anyone. A lot of these persons do not handload and never will.

Many of these same shooters did not grow up shooting; it's a relatively new thing to them. Minimal but adequate gun safety and close-range shooting skill suits their purposes well.

Just another perspective, not a criticism...

At our club we shoot a lot of falling plates summer and winter. We shoot rim fire and center fire open and limited class. So most everyone shoots 22 lr 9mm and 38 spl. Few shoot 45acp 40 s&w 1 guy shoots 38 super and tcm .

I like 40S&W. I own 6 handguns and 1 carbine that are 40s. I reload and cast my own bullets. I see a lot of 9mm brass laying around my local range. I pick up 40s and 45s but leave the 9s there. I prefer shooting 38spl, 44spl, 357mag and 44mag. I don't like to bend down and pick up brass! Needless to say, I love my revolvers.

I learned that 9mm was not at all a popular cartridge here in the United States back in the 1960's and even most of the 1970's.

So when you say it's interesting that 9mm was never popular and now it is nearly the only thing you see regularly, understand that you are talking about half a century ago.

I don't think it's entirely fair to blame new shooters for showing up with a 9mm handgun. First of all, the gun store is stuffed to the gills with them, most folks don't buy their first gun to learn the wonderful hobby of handgun marksmanship …
Great points. What we see today is very comparable to 1975, 50 years ago. Back then at the Range was a great variety of revolvers shooting .38 Special and occasionally the Magnums or a 1911 or a War Trophy.

Today it is all 9mm and mostly Glocks.

Yes, it seems that many guys are buying and shooting the 9mm and S&W are offering a lot of new 9mm models.
Two years ago I took my CCW class for my permit and everyone in the class shot a 9mm except me. I was the only one in the class shooting wheel guns. My philosophy is; as a civilian you don’t need 15 shots if you hit what you’re aiming at;)

I don't care for 9mm and the only reason I have one is my Dad gave me his old Walther P-38 that he bought mail order from Kliens in 1960 ... the only handgun that man ever owned , it lived in his sock drawer ... for over 50 years !
I cast bullets and reload for every gun I own ... the 9mm is a stinker to cast and load for ... I don't like it ...
Give me : 38 S&W , 38 Special , 357 Magnum , 45 acp , 45 Auto-Rim , 41 Magnum , 41 Special , 38 Super ... but don't give me no 9mm Luger !
I also shoot a lot of 22 LR .

I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of people who do not police their brass for reloading are shooting 9 mm. That caliber is the most common caliber for "one gun " owners, ammo is cheap, and so casings get left behind, even if the shooter cleans up.

I shoot a lot of 32 wadcutters out of my 327 Taurus. I can't deal with full 327 mag any more but I have a choice of 4 calibers out of one gun. Works for me
Yes! I EDC a Ruger LCRx in 327 Fed, but will never run 327s through it, only 32 H&R Mag (HPs) or 32 S&W Long (RNs or WCs), all accurate and meeting FBI penetration standard.

I agree 100% with Chris Baker over at LuckyGunner:

I shoot everything I own, .357, 44 mag, 41 mag, 44 Colt, and my.45 ACP. I prefer the wheel guns over the autos because the autos send the brass everywhere!. The worst offender is the Thompson (semi-automatic version), which sends the brass into areas unknown to mankind. Still, gotta love the Thompson for sheer fun.

I'm pretty good with 45acp, 44spl, 10mm, 357mag, 38spl, 9mm, 380acp. Own them all. But when I'm done breaking the clay targets I put out. I bring out the Colt Woodsman MT and shoot the small pieces. Nothing compares to its accuracy.
