I wrote the post a while back about the loss of our border collie, Champ the Wonder Dog, almost 3 and a half years ago. During this period, for the only time in our 38 years of marriage, we've been without a family dog. After a year or so I brought it up a time or two but my wife wasn't really receptive. She would look at me and say, "I miss Champ."

Out of the blue a few weeks ago I got a call from my uncle who I'd not talked to in a few months.

"Hey Faulkner," he says. "I got a litter of eight border collies about six weeks old. We have six females and two males. You interested in one or two?"

"I don't know," I replied. "Text me some pictures of what you got."

Yeah, some of you are already thinking "that was a mistake!"

Short time later the pictures shows up and I went and showed them to my wife, wondering what her response would be. She thumbed through pictures on my iPhone, backed up and thumbed through them again, then more slowly went through them one more time. She stopped on one particular picture.

"Call him back and tell him we want that one."

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Yep, that one," as she pointed to the picture.

Now it's a few weeks later and the puppies are weened from their mother. So, with my wife in the higher risk category for COVID-19, I left her at home and made the 500 mile round trip drive across three states to my uncle's home to pick up the pup this weekend.

When I got home and handed the puppy to my wife it was love at first sight, apparently from both of them.

I asked her, "you got a name picked out."

"Yes, I want to name her Daisy."

Back in 2009, we lost our Border Collie mix, Bucky. He was mellow, loving and extremely intelligent, one of the finest dogs we ever had. I keep pictures of him and his protégé Joe the Wonder Dog, beside my bed and thank the Lord that we were blessed with such dogs.

Looks like you found a young dog that will be great. Hope Daisy has a long and wonderful life with you both.

John

Here's a pic of Bucky instructing Joe that older dogs are the Alphas for more reasons than seniority...

When I was very young, at least 50 years ago, my dad bought a new Border Collie, Tib, that had been trained in basic tracking. (We had several cattle dogs, my dad was a rancher).

We had a calf that had gotten lost, and had wandered WAY off. We frankly though the calf had been stolen. (Rustling was a major problem in those days. The first trial I ever attended was the criminal trial of a cattle rustler—he got 10 years).

Tib sniffed the mom (the mom had wandered off too but came back sans calf), the last area the calf had been, and took off. 45 minutes later she led us directly to the calf.

It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.

WOW!! She's a real little beauty! Congratulations!

I got my first border collie when I was eleven years old and have been sold on them ever since. My last one, Patsy, died four years ago at age fourteen. She had gone on every trip with me and the pack string since she was six months old. After she died, I swore I would never get another dog. People showed me border collie pups, but I held firm...until I saw this...

Meet Suzy. She is my constant companion and goes with me practically everywhere. She reminds me when it's time to take our afternoon nap. She reminds me when it's time to go upstairs to bed right after the ten o'clock news. My other dogs would ride in the bed of the pickup. Not Suzy. She insists on riding in the passenger's seat. Ms. Judy says Suzy has me well-trained. Y'know...she just might have somethin there. Like I've always said, the bad thing about owning a border collie is that it's tough having a dog smarter than its owner.:D

Again...Congrats!!
