Phil, That is a beautiful gun. I too picked one up yesterday at a show in Crownpoint Ind.. Mines Ser. Number 60030. ( For Jerry ).It has a different set of grips & a different hammer. I will try to do pics in a little while. Nice find. I also just noticed my emblem is on the other side. I hope that is just because it is a newer gun.

Smith&W,
Beautiful gun.
The humpback hammer is a real 'plus', too.
The switch to sideplate logo is, in fact, because of the newer gun.
Circa 1937 is when you'll see most of the large, sideplate S&W logos.
Hussygun...A beautiful example. Congrats!
Don

Charlie:

Your Outdoorsman has been completely screwed up with that "weird" hammer and S&W stamped on the side plate !

Great finds - both of you! I've never even seen an Outdoorsman at the shows I attend.... but I'm still looking. Regards, Jerry

Jerry, the SN # is 43536. i was supprised to see it at this show too. i know the dealer who had it in his case. he said he did some trades for it and a older hi standard target 22 from some guy just this past tuesday at his shop. he took it to the show saturday. he said it was the most popular gun in his case so far that morning . i take it he ment some attending but mostly the other dealers as thay hawk eachothers wares at set up.
he also had a new to me dandy 1905 4th 38 in super nice cond. but i spent enough with this for the day.
it does not look to be shot much at all. recoil shield is still all blue. ejector rod and the very tips of both sides of brl have some blue worn. a bit of a turn ring as most any smith. im sure it was shot in the past but not much.
i noticed the cyl was sluggish in turning. i took it out and cleaned yoak brl and a drop of break free and she spins free and easy again.
dito with ejector if you pushed as if to eject it would retun on its own but you could watch it do so slowly. so i know this gun has not been used for a long time with the old oil or grease setting like that. may be original old oil yet?? not sure. Phil

PS, smith &W , that is a dandy pc. yes that is a later gun with the magna stocks. same era stock as the 357 and 44`s of that time. that hammer is a plus in my mind.

Charlie and Phil,
You both did very well to say the least! Charlie, in 1936, S&W moved the logo to the sideplate and on the N frames it occurred around the 50000 serial number.
Thanks for posting,
Bill

Congrats Phil, my friend!!!

Congrats to you to Jerry, for being such a gentleman and congradulating my friend Phil on his find, even though we all know that you are the "Outdoorsman guy".

The hobby could use more like you!

Both of these guns are fantastic examples of the breed !

Just look at their finish and the condition of both grips. Charlie is well aware of how much I appreciate the humpback hammers on the late versions of the pre-war Outdoorsman. Although I congratulate both gentlemen of their great finds I am truely envious as well !

Congratulations Hussygun and Smith &W on those beautiful pre war 38-44 finds.

As noted above GLL who has an incredible collection of 38-44's ODMs and his knowledge about 38-44's may well be hard to match too, is always a perfect gentleman to notice & congratulate what nice guns the rest of us manage to find now & then as well.

Keep those nice 38-44's coming. Maybe we'll get GLL to post more pics of his 38-44 collection before long.
