Not to beat a dead horse, but .... have a 1980 M36 (J7096xx). Can it handle a steady diet of +P ammo. Thanks much for your input. :D Gapper 1

A "Steady Diet" will probably loosen it up a bit sooner than standard pressure loads. But it's not gonna blow up. I'd do what most of us do. Practice some with the +P carry loads, but shoot standard pressure stuff the majority of the time.

I'm not sure what you mean by a steady diet but my suggestion would be to limit it to a cylinder full (5 rounds) a few times a year, and then just to ensure you are OK w/the recoil and can hit accurately. While I doubt you will do any damage, why speed up excess wear & tear?

I carried an older alloy J as a back-up during my LEO days, and we were required to qualify w/our off-duty/BU guns. The suggestion I offered is the same our Range Officer gave us.

Smith and Wesson themselves have told different people different answers to that question over the years. But if you look at a modern manual (or download) it will say something to the effect that all Model number stamped steel framed revolvers are safe for use with +P ammo. Or something to that effect.

All carry guns are ultimately expendable, so if it wears out, which would take a while, get a new one I suppose.

I have verified the sights to 15 yards with Winchester +P 158 grain lead SWC ammunition in my Chief's Special and it's almost 30 years older than your 1980 revolver. I do infrequently carry it and that is the ammunition used.

P&R Fan and Old cop are giving out the good advice here. Shoot a dab for familiarization but practice with standard velocity.

Besides, who wants to afford large quantities of +P ammunition anyway?

Thanks to all ! ..... What I mean by "steady diet" is use as carry, and maybe a box of 50 rounds on the range every four months or so. I was wanting to know what S&W stated with that year M36. Gator Farmer was on point. Thanks friend. My mistake, I should have worded my question in a clear manner. Thanks Again for the input.

I have a question on "cowboy" load 38 special, which are basically detoxed loads for single action shooting. Are they Ok for practice with my 72' Chief M36?
PS while at it anyone know Date with SN 44xJx?
Thanks

No ammo company would sell ammo that required limiting its use in a S&W to 5 rounds a few times a year. I'm sorry, that is simply a ridiculous notion.

I guess I'll have to put this on my tombstone.

+P is NOT loaded to high pressures.

It is loaded 3,000 PSI BELOW maximum allowable.

The myth of +P being a powerful load is just that, a myth not based in any form of reality.

I recommend that you shoot as much +P as you care to buy. In my opinion +P is nothing more than a fairly weak gallery load. It's a 125 at 925. C'mon, that's weak sister ammo! Much too wimpy for me to trust to save my life.
