What can you tell me about this P38 holster?

Well, first of all, it looks brand new, not fitting an item that should have been well used about 76 years ago. Also, the stampings on the back look like they were obviously put there to make the holster seem to be "a rare SS-marked holster." To the best of my knowledge, German holster makers didn't go to any lengths to mark holsters according to special units. The "death's head" stamping is way overkill. The format of this holster screams "cheaply machine-made." For example, the real holsters had molded leather clam-shell tops that protected the gun from dust, rain, mud, etc. This holster exposes its contents. The body of the holster is folded over to form the top half instead of using a separately-crafted piece.

For comparison, here is a genuine German P.38 holster from 1943.

I think you have a modern-day fake designed to appeal to the unwary. Just my opinion.

Allow me to show my ignorance -- isn't this a Luger holster?

It is a repro,,, but the holster offered up for comparison is the earlier P38 'Hardshell' type.
The repro is of the later 'softshell' type.

The Hardshell P38 looks much like the Luger Hardshell issue holster.

The German issue hardshell holster for the Czech Cz38 9mm pistol is often mistaken for the P38 edition.
The easiest way to tell quickly if it's for the Czech pistol is to look at the spare magazine pocket. It will be considerably wider (back to front) for the Cz's magazine. A P38 mag will drop into it and wobble around, but it will carry OK if needed.

The Germans designated the Cz38 as their P39(t) for issue to their troops.

No. It's specifically marked "P.38" on the back, and it's evident that is the gun that fit inside it. They do look similar, though.

Here's a Luger with its holster, below. Note the pull-tab peeking out from under the clamshell top - this was used to withdraw the P.08 gun from the holster. Also, a buckle was used instead of the P.38 tab and staple-like arrangement, which was faster to release.

I saw these for sale on line as original WWII issue in like new condition.

They just don't look 75 years old . The white thread stitching also looks wrong . The SS skull markings are just a bit too much .
All this just screams ...modern reproduction not actual WWII era holster.
