i was thinking about getting a (primary arms m4 red dot scope) for my new m&p 15-22 a1 comp, can anyone tell me if i will have to get it bore sighted, or if it will be pretty close when i mount it and i will be able to adjust it myself, and weather or not i leave my front sight on the rifle or not.

Primary Arms Red Dot

I use a PA Red Dot on my 15-22 and really like it. I think it's a good value and was easy to set up. Battery life is long, and it uses a conventional battery - unlike the reflex sight on my wife's Buckmark, which has some wierd battery that I'll have to hunt down somewhere when the time comes. I am co-witnessing through the stock S&W sights, and am basically balancing the red dot on the top of the front sight post. (I can still use the factory sights with the Red Dot turned off and the sight covers up). Just strap it on, adjust it to your factory sights and there'll be very little fussing around on the range.:)
Enjoy!

I have a PA M3 on a riser and this is the sight picture with the front sight left up.

With the M4 on the integral mount the front post will be more in the center of the lens. You can keep the sight in place, focus on the target and the front sight will kind of fuzz out of your vision and the dot will become sharp. Can't do this with a camera since you have 2 eyes.

When you first put the sight on the rifle you can use the adjustment dials on the sight to place the dot properly. Turn on the sight, look through the rear peep and place the dot on the tip of the front post like you'd normally be shooting. You can then look at the dot over your sights and it will retain the proper point of impact.

thanks rustpot, so i should have the dot about 1/8 or an inch above the front site even when looking through the rear site as well, or is that with no rear sit?

I responded to your PM with a much more thorough explanation. For those following along with the same question;

Zero the dot by placing it on the tip of the front post while looking through the rear as you would use the iron sights normally. Once you do so lifting your head up out of the tight cheek weld will give you the sight picture I posted above.
