I carry a vintage Model 36 snub for CCW. Not to offend anyone, but I'm really beginning to hate the stock grips on it - about as comfortable as a piece of 2 X 2. I ran across the Pachmyre "Gripper Grip" and wondered if anyone has these grips on a Model 36 or a J frame?

I have smaller hands but these appear as though they would work OK. From what I'm seeing, these grips cover the back of the grip frame and extend below the bottom of the grip frame as well - is that correct?

I carry on the belt on the right side towards the back in a Bianchi holster - usually under a shirt tail, sweatshirt or jacket. The wood grips don't print but I have no idea about the "Gripper Grips" as they look larger - any thoughts on that or experience? They appear as thought they would be fine and my holster holds the 36 in tight to the body - being rubber grips, are they going to "catch" on whatever I'm wearing to make things obvious or will they move freely against the clothing when I walk, etc.?

I know some like Pachmyre grips, some don't - I'm going for comfort and a good grip and hold - not looks. I just don't have any experience with Pachmyre grips.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If someone has these "Gripper Grips" on a J frame and could post a photo, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Check out the Compac. The Gripper is a large grip and although I know they make them for J-frames, I don't recall ever seeing a J-frame wearing one- it's that large, nearly as large as the gun itself.

The Compac, on the other hand, is sized to match the gun well, is larger than the factory grip, covers the backstrap and extends a bit below the gripframe so you can get a pinky on it.

You can try a Tyler T grip with the standard magna grips as well. I have long fingers and I couldn't control my 640 well with just the standard grips. Once I added the T grip it completely changed my relationship with the gun. I found that the T grip didn't work as well for me on K frames but it is perfect on the J frames. Bill

Here are some visuals off of the Internet.

While my J-frames are either carried in an ankle rig or in a pocket, I prefer the Uncle Mikes Boot Grips or the Hogue Bantam grips on my 340PD J-frame.

Grippers are a little big for a concealed J Frame. I think I have at least one pair of everything shown above. They all work well on the Js.
I like the Grippers on Ks and Ls. Got a pair on my 4 inch 66.

I know you asked about pachmyre, but I prefer the hogue product, bantam, I would suggest holding it before buying the compac or grippers

I carried my 36 with Pachmayr Compacts and they worked great. Watch the compacts though, Pachmayr makes two for the J frame. The compact covers the back strap and the compact pro leaves it exposed. I preferred the non-pro myself.

I need another J frame ..... oh I'm gonna talk myself into spending money I can tell.

Thank you all - greatly appreciate the help and advice. When I first looked (on the internet) at the "Gripper Grips" - I only found photos of the grips - not the grips on a handgun. I didn't realize they were so big. It does kind of "dwarf" a 36! LOL :-)

I'll look in to the Compac which seems to be more what I have in mind and will check out the others as well. Thank you all again for the information and the photos - a BIG help!!! Greatly appreciated!

Another vote for the Compac Pachmyre. Used to carry a model 49 with them...strong side belt scabbard or ankle holster. Worked well.

I've heard the argument about rubber grips catching on clothes, but I did not personally have any problem.

That said, I prefer wood...my Model 49 now has a pair of Craig Spegel grips. Pricey and a long wait, but perfect. A less expensive alternative to Spegel's grips are the Secret Service model offered by Eagle. Hogue also makes a similar grip in wood.

Properly fitted wood grips feel great, should great and conceal great. Lousy grammar, but you get my point!

If you decide to go with wood, check out the Ahrend's grips, nice profile, wood and finish of your choice and not expensive. You will have a 6 to 8 week wait while he custom makes them, but that is not bad at all. Randall made Knives has a 5 year turnaround time. I have some of Ahrend's Retro combats on a N frame, and a K frame and will be getting some for my J frame next...absolutely love the fit and feel. But which wood...Oh the decisions, there are so many to choose from!
My avatar shows some on my model 58 N frame, dark red cocobolo with a tung oil finish.

Is yours a round butt or a square butt. This makes a HUGE difference in what grips are available. That being said, I have a set of Grippers that I'd let go cheap if these are what you really want. They certainly do tame the recoil and give you a good grip.

I first encountered the Pachmayr Compac years ago on a Colt DS2 that I still regret being unable to buy at the time. The grips felt wonderful. When I bought my 640 no-dash 14 years ago I put Compacs on it and never looked back. I pocket carry the gun in a holster. I've never had any problems with the grip grabbing on clothing, and it gives me a high, well-controlled hold while absorbing recoil. The gun is my EDC.

I highly recommend the Compac.

Great tips on grips for an M36. What about a Model 37 airweight? Same issue with size of grips but you have to deal with more recoil than a 36.

T grips would help get a handle on it but not help with the kick.
Would Compacs or a Hogue equivalent help with the kick of a M37 on the range? Doesn't matter too much as a pocket carry.

Unless you are a very large person the Gripper is going to be too bulky, especially in an OWB holster. Like shouldazagged, my first exposure to Compacs was on a Colt DS. I learned to love them in no time, now every j-frame that I carry or shoot regularly wears them. Newer Compacs have the Pachmyar medallions on them but if you are patient they can also be found without medallions. I've had reasonable success finding them on ebay, GB and right here in the S&W Forum Classifieds.

In a word, yes.
