Paint sprayers--need your help

We have a Graco airless that we got from Home Depot for around three hundred dollars about fifteen years ago. Sits on a stand high enough to put a five-gallon bucket under it.

Have used it for years to repaint rental apartments. Works great. We filter the paint beforehand, flush thoroughly afterward, and add pump armor fluid before storage. Spray gun extension tube makes short work of cathedral ceilings.

Graco and Titan are good professional brands but they are much more expensive at a paint store than at Lowes/HD/Ace hardware and I've heard the paint store rigs have much better parts and are higher quality. Not sure if its true or not, but I had a Titan I bought from Sherwin Williams that was an excellent sprayer and could easily be worked on or repaired but it was about $900 bucks. Don't even think about buying a really cheap unit because if anything goes wrong it is probably "unfixable".

Don't waste your money on a " Wagner " like the ones in TV ads . Friends that bought them found them very short lived . Regards, Paul

....and you'll have blisters on your hands in no time from the weight of the painter when it's full. I gave up on mine and bought a Graco from Home Depot. $239 It has a 25' hose and draw hose that goes right into the paint can....no thinning necessary for latex.

I have to paint three cinder block foundations.

Any input as to brands that do a good job would be appreciated.

I’ve been a painter all my life and I like the Grayco and Titan sprayers. If you’re going to use only occasionally then purchase a low volume unit from HD or Lowe’s, however if this maybe the only time you’ll use it or on a rare occasion, I would rent one for the day if you think you could complete the job in a day or two.

The sprayer you get from the professional paint Store is indeed a far better unit but remember Sherwin Williams isn't the only brand out there, shop around. SW is well known in the business for sticking it to the small contractor or retail customer.

Also make sure the place you buy one also has a shop locally where necessary maintenance or repairs can be made.

Of course you can rent one, the going rate around here is $75 a day with a $250 deposit just in case you return it without properly cleaning it when you're finished.

For me Graco is the brand of choice.

Just 3 jobs I would rent one. My preference is Graco. Strain the product well and keep the screen and filters clean. Saves a TON of time and work. If doing any wood siding or such back brush it in and the job will last much longer and look better. For non professional use one of the smaller cheaper models will do just fine. Oh and always have and extra tip for the stinger. Once in awhile you get a defective one and nothing worse than having to shut down to get a replacement.

If this is to be a one shot deal - I'd rent one. If you intend on doing this often I'd consult a professional painter (they are usually at paint supply stores in the early morning) and get their opinion since they use them often. They would know best.

True but in cases like concrete blocks or a fence you can use a roller and achieve the same thing. Back rolling is far faster and easier on the applicator. Some tight spots may still need a brush.

Yes concrete and cider block use a roller. Does a much better job on semi-rough to rough surfaces than a brush.

The Graco unit we got came with a roller attachment for the sprayer that dispenses paint through the roller. We've never used it.

A painter friend uses a sprayer and then has an assistant follow behind with a roller to even out the sprayed surfaces.
