I want to paint my rifle/optics one of these following colors...
OD Green (my favorite option)

Desert Tan (made to look like a worn used in the sand box battle rifle)

Wood Land Camo (not sure how to do Camo...)

What type of paint ?
Brand?
3M tape?
Tips?
Avoid?
Prep?
What works best to strip oil/degrease?
Mount or wire settup to hold while painting?

Nothing fancy, I want to rattle can it.
I have done truck accessories when I was younger and things around the shop. And I did do a good job on those, but this is my 1st attempt at a rifle.

Maybe some of you can post up some pics of your projects in these colors and a semi detailed account of your method, tricks and things to avoid.

I know there are other threads on this subject, but this is mine. I dont want Digital like urban camo or tiger stripe ect... basic.. the parts can or will be...

1. OD Green/Black
2. Tan/Black.
3. Wood Land Camo
4. ??? / ???

I did my AR15 pistol with Krylon. Its composite material just like the 15-22.
I did the whole weapon in Tan. Then did big "strips" in OD Green, starting in front and working back. Then take a Natural Sea Sponge, found at a local hobby store, and add the "digital" look. You will spray Desert tan on to a paper plate, dab the sponge in the paint and then tab the sponge on the OD Green. Get another small piece of sponge, dab it in the OD Green and then Dab the Tan. So basically the dabbed paint is on the opposite color. Once done, take gray and black, and dab it all over the rifle.
Viola... your done and this is what it looks like

Couple of things, Cut the sponge into small pieces, doesnt take a big piece to get the look right.
And if you screw up and don't like how something looks, spray over it, and start again.

Finish it all off with a matte clear coat:)

Thanks ! Like the look. I realized there are a couple painting threads but I wana do mine old school rattle can and basic colors.
When you said strips were they vertical or horizontal? Or does it matter. Hows the finish holding up?

Anyone else have anything to add ?

I did the stripes vertically. So far its holding up fine. Nice part is, if it does start to chip, dab some paint on with a sponge and its fixed

Ok thanks! I will post up some pics as soon as I do this. Probly not till fishing season is over :D

I did my aluminum framed Springfield 1911 and the plastic stock on my Socom II with Brownell's Aluma-Hide 2. It worked out very well. There are some good videos on u-tube and from Brownells web site, for using this and other gun finishes. Degrease it well and wear rubber gloves to keep any oily contamination off the metal before and during spraying. Heat it up good between coats and especially during the curing process. I used a blow dryer while painting, and Arizona 100 degree days for the curing of the stock. The 1911 was done during Feb. and took longer to cure. The finish is holding up very well so far, but was kind of soft during the first month or so depending on heat and humidity. It's definitely a hard finish now, and doesn't scratch easliy, if at all.
