From the late 1970's well into the 1980's I attempted to collect the small caliber Smith HE pistols with no success. Everyone I found was beat to mess, rusted out, and/or void of finish. The few nice ones I saw had been pulled by the store owners and locked up in their own collections. It was apparent that these pre-war guns were quite rare in high condition and very common in low grade. Well, it appears that all these guys have either passed or now been forced to sell off some their pistols. These two have both been acquired this year by me for $300 to $375. Both are 95% and both have mint bores and cylinders. Patience does pay off. I am very happy about this!

Terrific finds, DocB. Congrats.

This forum rekindled my passion for .32s earlier this year. When I was 7 my grandmother taught me to hit pie plates with her Model 31 2". I found a '58 version like hers in the Spring. Then I caught the flu (as described by Hondo44 and others here).

I picked up a birth year ('52) .32 HE 3¼" that must have guarded socks or underwear since it was new. Today our letter carrier will deliver (to my lgs) a postwar .32 HE 4¼" with service stocks, barrel extractor knob, and a sn about 1360 above the first known postwar .32 HE. (Photos to follow.) As you said, "I am very happy about this."

DocB,

That's an awesome pair, decades apart but both like new!

Are the Mother of Pearl stocks numbered to the gun? They are correct vintage for that post war gun with no medallions. Is the gun a Transitional I frame or an Improved I with coil spring and only 5 screws?

That's the little gun that pre-dates 1936 that I picked up last week. You helped me evaluate and date it. The Regulation Police dates right at 1922. There's a hint of pencil inside the right grip that seems to match the number on the gun, but it's close to wore off.

Oh yeah, it has the pre war barrel knob.

Is it the right MOP stock with the serial number almost worn off?

The new SCSW-4 now indicates non-medallion premium stocks like the MOP also began ~ 1920, the same as the walnut stocks. But medallions were only reinstated in the walnut grips by order dates Feb. 11, 1929, Mar.18, 1929, and April 1929.

OK, how about Mutt and Jeff? The 6" is the target version and shows little wear, only small damaged spots due to improper storage. Its younger brother shows the honest wear of being the #1 gun in my CCW rotation. The target gun is from about the '20s, while the snub is from ca. 1949.
