I have a S & W 38 Single Action Second Model markings but patent dates do not seem correct : May Pat'd 11.80 Oct.2.83.two Aug.4.85.Oct.11.87.Feb.14.88.Apr.9.89.June3 .90
I think this relates to the S & W 38 Safety Hammerless 3rd model ?
Is that the barrels of these two models were interchangeable ? Or may it be a recent reassembly ?

Thanks for your comments,
Daniel

Does the serial number match on all parts? Those dates do indicate the barrel is of later vintage, and many of the barrels on the top breaks can interchange, and S&W never threw away any thing the could eventually use. It could happen that a .38SA was assembled at the factory after 1890, using a Safety Hammerless barrel. Your serial number would have to be very near the end of production for the .38SA. Ed

Ed - what is the serial number, don't see it in the OPs post?

Daniel, are you describing a 38 Single Action Second Model (spur trigger) or a Third Model (trigger guard)? I think the first barrels on the Model 1891 38 Third had the 1890 patent date and would definitely fit the Second Model.

glowe, Daniel didn't post the serial number, that's why I asked about it. I'm assuming he's talking about the spur trigger, 2nd model .38SA, as didn't mention that the barrel said "Model of 91", only the patent dates. Ed.

Thanks for your comments,
Exactly the Cylinder has not the matching number...
