Pawn shop find nickel 10-6-----is it worth it?

Just remember the pawn shop rule - they likely have half of their listed price invested so dicker away and do not be afraid to walk. IMO that is a $400 gun without the factory grips.

Having worked in a pawn shop for several years ( part time ) they are most likely in a 1/3 the asking price or even 1/4. Pawn shops are notorious for offers way less than actual value and asking full top dollar. I would offer away, worse he can say is " NO "

Another tactic that seems to be prevalent in most pawn shops that I have dealt with over the past many years is that if the gun has not been out for sale but for a few days or a week, you can try to dicker all you want and they won't budge. They will tell a gullible customer:"That's about what I have in it, I can't come off any." But if it sits for several weeks or months (which vintage Smith and Wesson revolvers in good shape usually don't do and are gone very quickly), they might reduce the price somewhat. Also a friend of mine who worked in a local pawn shop told me that they usually gave a seller about 20% of what the firearm was actually worth.

Thanks all for your wisdom and advice. My wife talked me into forgoing my interest in adding to my collection for now as she thinks we should get a boat! I say go ahead and twist my arm Honey!

This mirrors my experience with the local pawnshops here in my area.

OTOH, $400 sounds more like a pre-pandemic price to me, but $700 also seems a bit high.

If the grips are wood, they look like they might be Ropers, and if so that would significantly affect the price since they would be worth 2x-3x more than the originals.

As always, YMMV and caveat emptor...

Look for the N under the barrel flat. I have a Model 10 nickel. Carried one as a LEO in the day. Easy to make it really shine with a light polish of flitz and will improve any dull spots. .

Remember they don't make nickel finish any more! $700 may be a little high. I think $500 would be a fair offer without original grips.

Just from the one pic, I'd suspect a refinish to Nickel.
Some pretty rounded edges there that should be sharp.
But it may just be the photo and lighting.

I like to have stuff in my hands for final exam day.
Even then if orig, I'd think $700 is high for a Mod10 - 6.

..but then I don't get out all that much anymore.

My nickel M10-6 has s/n 3D137xx which I think makes it 1978.
Mine appears to be 100% factory original, even the stocks.
The ejector rod on mine is NOT nickeled, as the one in your photo appears to be.

Just throwing that out there. I don't have my book right here so I can't say that proves anything. Ejector rods are easy to swap so I can't say for sure mine isn't a replacement (but I doubt it).
