I got an email last week saying that my PayPal account was under restrictions due to suspicious activity on my c/c linked to the account.

It looked very real. But I noticed something.

It didn't address me by my name, like PayPal notifications usually do, but by my email address.

And then when I checked the sent from email address it was obviously a scammer. So I moved it to my spam folder and deleted it.

This morning, checking my email. there's another email from "PayPal " in my spam folder saying that I didn't respond to the earlier email, and that my account would be suspended if I didn't respond promptly.

Gotta give these scammers credit, they look almost legit.

Consider this a public service announcement.

If it looks even remotely suspicious, it probably is. Never click on a link in one of those emails. If you have a Paypal account, just go to a browser and logon independently of the email. You'll soon find out if you're being phished or not.

Skepticism is drilled into us at work. The training works and it becomes second nature to be wary. IT delights in concocting fake phishing emails to send to us. If you miss the signs and fall for it, you're greeted with yet another message signing you up to a training class.

I regularly get the scam email telling me my PayPal account is suspended. In second place are bogus phone calls saying my Verizon account has been suspended.

I have been getting recorded calls telling me that "due to suspicious activity on [my] account" there is a warrant out for my arrest, and I should "press 1 now to speak to a deputy." !

I got a phone call like that a couple of years ago. I forget the whole pretense to the request, but the guy with the Nigerian accent was telling me that i would be turned in to the police for prosecution to the maximum extent of the law, or some foolishness like that, if I didn’t comply with his request for information.

I loved it, and used very colorful language when asking him to send the police along to my house, and letting him know what I thought of lowlifes like himself. One of the better telephone calls I’ve had...

I get so many I ignore everything, I have even ignored some legit stuff because of so many scammers. My department gets complaints and we do reports weekly of these scammers taking advantage of folks all the time and it's sad. It's really sad when good folks fall for them and send them money.

I have gotten more than a few from Amazon Prime about Suspicious Purchase's of $750. on my Amazon prime account. sometimes as many as 4 or 5 a day. Always comes up as an local area code and sometimes with a persons name. I always mess with them because they cant tell me what my account # is they keep telling my Name as the account number. I usually keep them on the line till them become so frustrated that they hang up on me,... Besides I don't have an Amazon Prime Account
