The JIF peanut butter in my current 18 ounce jar was running low, so I decided to transfer the little dab left to a newly purchased jar. After completing this overwhelming, but undaunted task, I must have picked up the lid to the old jar and couldn't figure out why it was a little too big and did not fit the new jar. Aha, apparently JIF decided to reduce their jar serving size from 18 ounces to 16 ounces without having the decency to tell me and without my permission . :eek: :eek: :( :( Price was, as best I can recall, about the same as last time. Unfortunately I'm stuck with JIF 'cause I don't like the other brands. Arrgghhhhhhhhhhh! Rant off!
 
You think that's bad? They have shrunk the width of Scott TP!
 
I'm just thinking of what my late wife would have done to me if I was caught transferring old food into a new container. It probably would have been deemed too nasty for Game of Thrones.:eek:

Peanut butter and popcorn!

Just put a "gob" on the edge of the bowl, or on a plate if you're eating out of a bag, and "dip" or scrape the popcorn in the peanut butter as if it were chip-dip. :)
 
The subject of this post is idiots in manufacturing changing the "normal" size of items they sell.................

A "pound of coffee" only weights 14 oz.......

A five pound bag of sugar only weights 4 pounds......

The list goes on..................JUST RAISE THE PRICES..........

Most of us aren't stupid enough to NOT notice the cheating on the scales....................

But, now they are messing with PEANUT BUTTER.............
that is going way too far!!
 
My wife says her Grandpa used to talk about how he kept getting stronger and stronger as he got older. As a young man it was a real chore to carry $20 worth of groceries from the car to the house and took several trips, but as an old man he could pick up $20 worth of groceries with one hand!
 
We normally buy the large economy size jars, but haven't been able to find them at a good price lately.

My wife bought a few of the smaller jars to carry us over, but I've noticed that they all have VERY concave bottoms, not only giving you less peanut butter, but making it that much harder to get the last of it out of the jar! :eek:
 
The other manufacturers trick is to change the design and colors on the package and raise their price. I don't know which is more low down, a subtle package size change or the packaging change. It is like they want to pretend they are not really raising prices, but just reducing the size or that they are giving you something new.

By the way I have never had a dog that did not love peanut butter. I buy the large 4 pound containers from Krogers, and my dog eats more of it than I do. I spread it out in little bits in one of her dry dog food meals each day. I also let her lick out the container when it gets mostly empty.

My Avatar was shot with the aid of peanut butter. One of those million to one shots. Just happened to have a camera and it just happened to come out perfect (IMO).

Canidae dog food used to have a large & loyal following. It was a very good quality food at a decent price. Then they got bought by Diamond foods. (Google Chinese melamine food poisoning :mad:). First thing they did was change the ingredients to make it cheaper, jacked up the price and made the bag 33# from 35#. There was a bit of an internet chiznet storm and a whole passel of us jumped ship.
 
Years ago when the 1 lb coffee can went to 13 oz I saw the writing on the wall. We let 'em get away with it so naturally other companies did the same thing with their products.

As the saying goes, "things are getting thinner. We are being forced to pay more for less and accept a reduction in quality to boot.

There are some times this can work in your favour. For various strange reasons cereal comes in different sized boxes in different countries. Sometimes the orders go astray and turn up in your local grocery store. Other times it is deliberately put into the US chain because the original buyer backed out, went bust or whatever. I always inspect the price/ounce when in the cereal aisle. I've lost count of the number of times the regular sized stuff on "special" turns out to be more expensive than the weird sizes at a non-sale price. Go figure.

Now $20 barely covers the gas for a round trip to the grocery store.
 
You can always pick up a Tub-O-Jif at one of those big box membership club stores. Bet you can get a 5 gal bucket of it cheap:=)
FWIW, I have a similar rant for coffee. Can't remember the last time I found a full pound of coffee in the market :-(
 
My 5 quart pails of ice cream are now 4 quarts. bought a quart of milk in a round plastic container to take camping and found it was only 1 1/2 pints.

Back in the '60s my dad and an older carpenter were trimming out a new house and the old guy complained, if this trim keeps getting thinner, pretty soon you'll be buying it in rolls! It took 50 years, but we're just about there. 2x4s keep shrinking -- they're not even 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 any more, and my house is 1 5/8 x 3 5/8 -- fun to remodel! 4 bundles of shingles to the square, now, instead of 3 -- but at least the guarrentees are getting longer again.

Oh, that's right -- this is a peanut buttwer thread. My dad's long time carpenter friend brought nothing but peanut butter on rye for lunch for 30+ years!
 
Raise the price 20% and 99% of the population will notice.

Shrink the package contents 20% and perhaps 10% of the population will notice.
 
A few years back many of these companies that are reducing product size actually had the audacity to say that they had conducted surveys and that customers actually preferred the smaller package reductions. Yeah right, bull!

Im gonna have to go ahead and agree with you that Reeses is the best, but recently i decided to take a healthier approach to peanut butter. So i switched to this

... and the screwing of the American consumer continues. Sad to say manufacturers think we're all stupid and I think they are right.

This isn't the way it was supposed to be when I went to school.

What happened?
 
Watch out for toothpaste (yes toothpaste). The widened the hole by 10-25% to increase the speed with which you go through a tube because people measure out toothpaste by length.
