My grandfather served during that period and said to me once, "when I think of December 7th I don't think of sunken ships and fallen sailors. I think of two mushroom clouds and the consequences of awakening a sleeping giant."

But then that was par for the course for the Japanese military. Last year I read a very interesting book on Japanese military intelligence operations. As I recall, in one instance professional intelligence analysts prepared a superlative analysis of U.S. capabilities and likely actions. The preparers were praised for their diligence and the quality of their work... which they were ordered to destroy because it conflicted with the preconceptions of the decision makers in question who'd already decided on a course of action WITHOUT the benefit of the information provided in the report. The ultimate results are known to all.

A personal thing happened on this date in 1942. At the age of seventeen, I reported to the Navy.
You can always tell when it is December 7, there is a little "nip" in the air.

A local Sailor named Sherrill, has a park named after him (Sherrill Park) who was a local who was killed there that day. They usually hold all things Vet related there, but cancelled todays events due to the cold temps.
Rest in Peace to all the Americans and any innocents killed that day.
This Gent was being harassed by his neighborhood home owners association about flying his flag. This man was Medal of Honor Recipient (recently deceased) Van T. Barfoot. Im glad he stuck to his guns and flew the flag. The h.o.a. later backed down. Thinking of this makes me want to rage, but I also get teary-eyed thinking how our vets get screwed.
