Anybody know what happened to pecans in the shell? I always liked having a bowl of nuts in the shell, mixed nuts or just pecans, siting on the counter around Thanksgiving time, something to stop and nibble on each time I walked by. For at least the the last 3 years the grocery stores have had zero pecans in the shells, and they aren't included in the bags of mixed nuts either. Seems like the only way to get pecans is to order them direct from a grower, or settle for shelled pecans in the bakery isle at the grocery store. Costco has perhaps the best price on the shelled pecans, $10 or $12 for a 2 pound bag. But I'd rather have the pecans in shells, but they're just nowhere to be found in Vermont anymore, probably the same in all the New England states. I would hope pecans in the shell at least make it to the shelves in the states where they grow pecans, but it just seems odd that we aren't seeing them anymore in the North East. Maybe they're getting exported out of the country ... ?

Ran this by my wife and as it says VT. in your screen name you might be close to a "Price Chopper/ Market 32 Store" She says to the best of her knowledge they have them in large bins.

I remember the last time we were in Maine they was a large candy and nut store not too far down the road from the Kittery Trading post. They had just about anything you would be looking for. Sorry do not remember name of business.

Good luck!

Thank you NYLakesider! I just swung by Price Chopper / Market 32 in S. Burlington, and pretty much the same story. No bags or bulk of just pecans and I could see a single pecan in the shell in one of the bags of Diamond Brand mixed nuts. So I guess the pecans are technically there, but nothing like what it used to be. Shaws, another large grocery chain here, had no in-shell nuts, and Hannafords, the other grocery store, had no pecans. Shelled will have to do it for this kid! Happy Thanksgiving to you & your wife!

A happy thanksgiving to you and yours!:)

T think I know

We have had bumper crops of pecans for a couple years now but we also had a squirrel move in upstairs in our barn. I can remember having pecan trees in my yard since the 60's and usually had to shake the trees to get the pecans but after the leaves had begun to fall from the trees. NOW the squirrels, crows & Blue Jay's start before the hulls have begun to open stealing the pecans, the hulls are usually still green. By the time the leaves have started to fall all the pecans are gone. I thought of declaring war on them but decided that since they are willing to work for their food I have to respect them for that.
In the not so distant past we could pic 3, 5 gallon buckets of pecans, now we buy what we need. I know of no reason why they began their stockpiling so soon but it's much sooner than before!

We have them all over our front yard. There were none last year, but they are plentiful this year. I have already picked up (probably) six or so gallon buckets and need to get back out there when it dries up just a little.

We had a tornado come through here in the early morning of Oct 21st and I lost most of my grafted pecans blowed over we had the best crop ever this year but they are mostly gone now had grafted Kanza and Pawnee nuts last year did not have many but had a bumper this year. I told my7 wife we were going to have some wind tonight and maybe it will blow some of the nuts out of the trees, boy did it ever! Lost a lot of Loblolly pines too. NOTE: I had grafted the pecans in 2001. Jeff

As my neighborhood has become more urban the squirrels get the majority of my pecans! Trapping and pellets can’t get enough of them!

Is it a FDA/health thing?

I just assumed that when nutcrackers looked like this, only shelled nuts would be sold.
