The backstory: I was at my local gun store a couple weeks ago, and one of the folks who works there told me he had a gun that I might be interested in. It was a S&W 645 in the original box. I bought it on the spot.

While cleaning and inspecting it, I managed to launch the guide rod across my cluttered garage. I spent a long time looking, to no avail. I took a look to see if I could purchase a replacement. No luck, every source was simply out of stock. I noticed the part number was the same between the 645 and the 4506. Which also happens to be the same as a 1006, and a 1026, and a 4586, all of which I own.

S&W forum member @peh_7 was kind enough to reply to my PM. He makes these guide rods out of stainless steel.

I ordered 3. I reckon a few spares (in the event of material failure, or my future bumbling) were a good idea. I found the errant guide rod from the 645 in a boot a day later, but by then, I was glad I had ordered some more.

They arrived this week.

The fit is flawless. The craftsmanship, excellent.

The guide rods fit perfectly in both my 645 and 4506.

I own quite a few 3rd generation S&W pistols. I think I am going to have him make up another couple guide rods…just in case.

Shown in the photo, the remaining guide rod, the two S&W guide rods, and the 4506 and the 645.

Reminds me when 25+ years ago I did the same thing on my Sig 220. I looked everywhere, but couldn't find it. I called Sig, & they sent one for free. But it was slightly different. It worked fine, but 9 months later the original one showed up where I had looked 100 times before. I put the original back in. GARY

I am a new user so I am unable to post feedback for peh_7. If you do not mind me posting here, I would like to say I just received my guide rod today from him and it is 100 times better than the one that came with my 4506. The one that came with my gun felt light and made of cheap cast/pot metal. Maybe aftermarket? This one looks and feels better than the guide rod from the factory for my 5906. This guide rod should have been standard from S&W. I highly recommend if you need one to order from him. If you do not need one order one anyways just to have one on standby in case your current one breaks since you cannot find any spare ones anywhere anymore.
