Standard Catalog of S&W 2nd Ed. says on pg. 181
That in 1970, the Model 64 was introduced with tapered barrel in 4". That in 1972, the 64-1 heavy barrel was introduced for the Okla. HP. chambered for the .357 magnum which became the Model 65. That in 1973, it became heavy barrel only. Hope that helps. - 'ole joe

Elmer, are you sure of your date? This one has the pinned barrel which is much older than 2009. Also, the original Model 64s with the tapered barrel had the square butt. Can you give us more details?
I had the factory put a tapered barrel on a much later round butt Model 64 and really like the gun. It is one of my favorites.

Oh the gun is much earlier..... I just produced the 4" pencil barrel on it in 2009.......

The pencil barrel Model 64s are becoming very collectable now. The are 40 years old and only produced for 2 years. If you come across one in pristine condition consider yourself lucky. Watch the value of these early 64s go up and up.
