I'm a resident of Ohio and I've had a Pennsylvania non-resident carry license for 10 years. In the past, I've submitted my application, along with a copy of my Ohio license, to the Centre County Sheriff's office by mail and have gotten the license back in 2 weeks. The State now requires that an applicant appear in person at the Sheriff's office. Denny Nau, the Sheriff of Centre County is very gun-friendly, but it's a 6 hour round trip from where I live. Does anyone know if any of the western Pennsylvania counties along the Ohio border will issue non-resident permits? Has anyone here from Ohio done this?

Thanks

I've done it, but I went into Westmoreland County. I'm in the Twinsburg/Steetsboro/Macedonia area; the Westmoreland County Sheriff is located in the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Greensburg - I'd say about 2-1/2 hours from me. I used to live in that county up to 2008 & had no trouble obtaining my permit, however they did ask me to write a short letter to the Sheriff explaining why I was requesting it. I thought that was odd, but I went along with it. Just told them I travel to PA quite often to visit family & friends & wanted to extend my carry beyond the Ohio border when I did so. Had my permit mailed to me in Ohio & received it rather quickly - maybe 2 weeks.

Just out of curiousity, Pennsylvania doesn't reciprocate or honor an Ohio CCW? The State Police website should advise you on that.

Pennsylvania & Ohio do not have reciprocity in CCW licenses.

Thanks for your comments. Pennsylvania is planning to stop honoring non-resident out-of-state permits, so getting a Utah permit does not help. Handgunlaw.us does not address the issue of which county sheriffs will issue non-resident Pennsylvania permits. Unfortunately, Ohio and Pennsylvania don't have reciprocity. I guess I'll have to start calling the sheriffs offices in the nearby Pennsylvania counties or plan a trip to central PA.

Again, I would check Westmoreland County. Way shorter drive than Centre County & Westmoreland is 2nd Amendment friendly. Stay away from Allegheny County.

I'm sure a lot of Illinois folks are in the same quandary. Before we had concealed carry many of us got the non-resident PA permit because it was so easy to do, and honored in a fair number of states. I still have several years on my PA license so this is not an immediate concern for me, and I am hoping that by the time I need it there will be reciprocity between PA and IL. Between my IL resident license, and my non-resident licenses from Utah and PA I am covered for the vast majority of states. I still have to leave my gun behind when I have to visit NY, however. When I have to go anywhere east of PA I feel like I have traveled to a foreign and unfriendly country.
