People who don't use the passing lane to pass

The timing of this thread is perfect. I drove back and forth across the NYS Thruway today to get to our forum picnic. I told Hillbilly77 when I got to his house that the ride there was perhaps the worst I've ever seen it. People camped in the left lane going their own pace, in their own world, with no regard for anyone else on the road.

Once they finally catch on that they are holding up traffic they try to speed up rather than getting into the right lane. And if they ever get into the right lane they speed up 20mph. Then you pull in behind them in the right lane because they are now doing 85! As soon as you do they slow down to 50. When you can finally get around them they look at you like your some kind of lunatic!

UGH! It's maddening!

As a funny side note...my business insurance guy says his sister divorced her husband because he always drove in the left lane! He swears it true.
Never met her but I like her!

My pet peve, minivans and SUVs .
If there's a road plugging nuisance glob of cars doing half the posted limit, one or the other is spearheading the constipation.
I used to enjoy the open road.
See the world morph from flat lands, to forest, to valleys, and desert.
rural to urban sprawl, and the city lights fading in the rear view mirror.
The cool breeze from the windows, bringing the scent of nocturnal country air.
Hours I sat, hand upon the wheel, cleansing the soul with the sound of finely tuned horsepower, day turning to night, and the brilliant morning sun setting aflame, the veil of night, in the eternal battle across the land.

Then the SUV became the defacto mode of soccer moms across the nation.
Cellphones became implanted to their auditory systems, later upgraded to texting.

One simply cannot enjoy and savor the interstate system as we once could.
It's become drudgery, necessitating constant vigilance against the unlimited capacity of the iPhone junkies boundless stupidity.

left lane use-age is based upon the speed limits as designated.
If driving at any speed less than posted, the driver should be assessed for a violation period. If maintaining the posted speed....tough!

It's not illegal to pass on the right on an Interstate Highway. Slower traffic must keep to the right, and the number of lanes in each direction are determining factors as to whether a lane is used for entry, cruising, or passing.

If the speed limit is 70, you can't exceed that speed under normal conditions. If the car ahead of you is traveling at 70, you could be cited for speeding if you pass that car.

IT BUGS ME TOO!

BUT if you are carrying, or not, it'd be best to mind your P's and Q's and not try to "get even" & create a road rage incident that could easily escalate into something a whole lot worse. It is not your job, & would be impossible to try and correct all others bad driving habits. Do I wish cops would right more tickets for them and all the other SFB'S, YOU BET. NO headlights in the rain/dawn/dusk, tailgaters, weavers, texters etc.

They are so stupid in Alabama that a COP argued with me and said there was nothing prohibited about the left lane. I had to ask him, if this is true, then why the hell do all those inmates keep making signs that read "slower traffic keep right". He just huffed and sent me on my way (without writing me a ticket for what he pulled me over in the first place for).

Don't go to Fayetteville, NC. It's like NASCAR--slow traffic on the left, and they get steamed if you try to pass them. They don't stop at red lights, either.

I have long ago given up on schooling slower folks in the left lane to move over. It is pointless!
I just leave myself some room and pass in whatever lane is available.

I used to make a point of letting other drivers know I thought they were idiots when they did something I didn't approve of on the road.

Then one day I pissed off the wrong meth head and he chased me halfway through Tacoma trying to run me off I 5. He got ahead of me about 2 exits north of Ft. Lewis and started slamming on his brakes to try to get me to rear end him.

I waited till he passed the exit and the I took it. He proceeded to drive up the embankment to continue the chase. I pulled into a gas station and made it inside before he got there. The only reason he didn't kill me is because as he walked in the door of the station the attendant came out from behind the counter with a baseball bat.

When the Tacoma PD showed up I gave them a complete description of him and his vehicle including license plate and the attendant corroborated my story (at least as much as he saw) the police refused to even bother following up on it.

The point to this story is if you trifle with people you don't know long enough you will eventually win what I like to call the Psycho Lottery and run into someone like this.

If I see someone driving like that in the passing lane a go around them and let it go.

Oh geez, please don't get me started on this. My blood pressure will skyrocket, I'll say something I ought not to and get my first time-out from the moderators.

On a related note, in Washington state on a three lane or more freeway it's illegal for a vehicle over 10,000 GVWR or pulling a trailer to be in the left lane. If I had a dollar for every time that one was ignored...

One of the favourite excuses for left lane hogging is that the ride in the right lane is rough. You can split the breakdown of the right lane between poor road construction and habitually overloaded trucks IMHO. Anybody who has driven on I-15 from CA to NV or I-40 across AZ will know what I'm talking about.

My sister literally has an IQ a point higher than Stephen Hawking's. Brilliant, creative, compassionate woman.

I haven't been forced to ride with her driving in several years, thank heaven. On the interstate she gets in the left lane and drives five miles an hour below the posted limit. I've tried telling her that's a good way to get ticketed, forced off the road or shot. She just says, "It's their problem."

Drives me bat poop crazy.

Your sister is passive aggressive...

Actually I can deal with the left lane homesteaders. What really jerks my chain are the people in the right lane whose speed can fluctuate from 5mph below the speed limit to 5mph above it.I'd be driving along the highway with the cruise control set at the speed limit and all of a sudden I've caught the person in front of me.I go to pass them and they decide to speed up again.

Getting back to the original topic I think people hang in the left lane at least until they're done picking their nose. That goes for the women out there also. Yeah,You know who you are!

Pisses me off too. And I start looking for the SLOWER TRAFFIC RIGHT LANE sign and there isn't one on the interstates.

Are they going the speed limit?

Ol' Muss there makes a good point that is besides the point. DOT will post a minimum speed allowed (occasionally) and the upper speed limit so technically anything between those numbers should be acceptable.

Back to the real world. People on the road need to wake up and revert the cranio/anal and understand there are folks that want to fly for whatever reason, may be there is a fire somewhere. Driving like Molly Putz "It's the speed limit so I don't care" is self serving and ignorant. Just drive however feels right according to road, weather conditions and the cars capability. Some vehicles feel right at 60, some at 85 plus. Lead, follow or get out of the way, is that so hard?

No need to be the rock in the river.
On that note, how about the Patrol doing 5 under the limit in the center lane?

PA has a "left lane law" that, amongst other things, prohibits the use of the left lane unless you are going to make a left turn within a given distance or passing slower moving vehicles that "should be" in the right lane. Most, but not all of the drivers I see ignoring this law are in vehicles with out of state plates or older drivers (usually women) in slow motion who move into the left lane to turn left five miles up the road. The OP is right - it ticks me off also and I often wish bump drafting was legal!

I was referring to the upper limit . . .

It's frustrating. I've seen all 3 lanes driving side by side. Nothing in front of them, cars amassing behind them. To use a football analogy, I call it the screen play. Also, when passing a slower vehicle that's in the right lane, they speed up and match your speed and suddenly you are the one blocking traffic in the left lane.

Auto writer Brock Yates (sp?) gave them the name LLB (left lane bandit). It has been part of my every day vocabulary for decades. I rate them just behind soccer moms with cell phones in mini-vans.
