Pepper spray - any suggestions?

reerc, I can't help you with your choice, but I will commend you on trying to prevent an AD. I was in an AM/PM clinic last year for a drug test when a young man came in, led by a young lady. He had no shirt on, apparently having removed it to cover his face. He was howling in pain, and she was laughing almost uncontrollably. After the nurse got him into the back, we got the story from the girl. He had been sitting in his pickup during his lunch hour, playing with his new pepper spray. He apparently accidentally sprayed himself in the face. I'm not sure what brand he was using, but the contents seemed to do their job well.

Never found a reason to use any kind for spray except for the "lead" kind. I've gone through the "Training" and also the Stun Gun - including the original one that was a Bean Bag full of lead shot and not these electrical things - and if the BG doesn't understand what he is facing he isn't likely to be affected one way or another. I've also seen inmates 'practice' with Mace cans smuggled in by their Lawyers and like most anything else you can get "used" to the stuff. Of course, when you add a dose of Meth to the mix, well, Lead Poisoning is the only cure!!!

If you have a friend who is in law enforcement, you can get some Cap-Stun. It's pretty darn good but is only sold to Law Enforcement.

As a matter of fact, I have this nephew ... but I wouldn't want him doing anything that might get him in trouble.

Seems to be a consensus building for foxlabs. Do we know if they are limited to LE sales, or can they sell to us plebes?

I can tell you that spraying pepper in an enclosed area sucks. (Has seen it done in a jail cell more than once). I have also seen it sprayed in an open housing unit (30 plus cells) and have had effects for several hours. I think pepper is for outside if at all possible, inside not so much.

MSI makes a "triple action" that I've been fond of. It mixes some old fashioned tear gas in with the OC. That way if you miss a bit and get someone in the chest, the tear gas is supposed to waft up. It also has a UV dye for the "third part" of the triple.

Only a few states mandate lower percentages of OC content. Michigan did, but the law was often ignored. A few also do limit the size of the cannister. Bear spray, since it is ostensibly meant for bears, is still legal in some of these places.

MSI offers their cannisters in pink now. That's what my wife carries.

I've tended to carry OC in addition to a firearm for the simple reason that it can often work on unruly animals.

GF: I couldn't find MSI at galls.com, got a link?

While I don't have first hand experience of that, refer back to my second post in this thread. It was my daughter's car. I picked it up from her where she was working downtown, and went to do her a favor, and fill up her gas tank. While I was there filling up, I noticed something orange on the seat, so I touched it. It wasn't sticky, and I wiped it off on a napkin. Good darn think I didin't touch my face with that finger, because in a few more seconds I started to piece together what had happened; found the canister, saw the ruptured side, and began to feel the burning eyes - just from what was in the air.

As soon as the car was gassed, I headed for home as quickly as I could, and it was making me cough - and this was just from what was oozing into the air from what had soaked into the seat.

Wicked stuff; I can't imagine someone "getting used" to a direct blast in the face of this stuff, but we hear wild and crazy stories of what people can/will do.

I wonder about spraying pepper spray in an enclosed area, say to repell someone in a boat cabin. I have read there is a (spray) gel type formula which sticks to the attacker but doesn't float around to affect the person doing the spraying also.
Any suggestions or experineces?
Steve

They make pepper foam. It'll still make you gag when you spray the bad guy. Stains the walls a nice orange color too.

I hate OC, always affected me worse than the bad guys.

I vote for the Taser.

My instructor told us that Gel or Foam is an option; but, it also has it's drawbacks. While it may not cause the collateral issues that spray does in enclosed spaces, the subject may also be able to wipe it off and throw it back at you. Cheaper Than Dirt sells the Fox Labs stuff.

I also use Spitfire (http://www.spitfire.us) - carry it when I go jogging or when I am walking to/from my car from some place at night, since I don't have my CHL yet. No safety stuff, except for having to push the button down and forward when sprayed.

I, too, like the angle of spray for better aim. Thanks for all the good tips!
