What was your first Smith and Wesson??

My first was a 2 inch square butt model 36 in 1972, bought a new model 65 same year that I later carried as a local cop. Model 36 went to Ex-wife, model 65 still at my house. Cut the square butt to round butt and it became my horse back riding gun, carried in a cross draw rig. Stainless heavy barrel in 357 has a lot of merit. Later went to model 19 for PD carry, still have that one too. Great guns.

I was given a S&W .38 Single Action 2nd Model, non-firing, when I was in my teens - given by a mentor. He suggested I carefully take it apart to explore the workings. It had a burst barrel or cylinder as I recall.
I did take it apart…but putting it back together correctly never happened. The mentor went away and the neat old revolver was lost in the sands of time. As previously stated, it wasn't my last S&W.

My first S&W was a Model 1000 12 ga. semi-auto, won on a raffle ticket in the mid 70's. It was followed by a 686 no dash 4 inch, a 66 2.5 inch, an M&P Shield 2.0 .45, and just lately a model 65 .357 3 inch. All still in my possession except the 66, which I seriously regret selling.

It's kind of complicated; a Model 65 that was issued to me by my department in 1993, and while I was in the academy I put a 4506 on layaway and paid on it throughout the police academy. Once graduated, I turned the revolver in to the department after completing transitioning to the semi-auto.
About 12 years later the department began issuing the M&P .40S&W full size for duty. The revolvers were signed over any of the officers who carried them to keep as a privately owned gun. So technically I owned the 4506 first (my oldest son has it now, after retiring from the department) but had possession of the model 65 first, owning it 12 years later. A testimony to the product, it was probably reissued to dozens of officers over the years and sent many thousands of rounds down range. It has the best trigger of anything I presently own and it'll hit 12" steel at 100 yards no problem. I'm keeping it until I leave this earth, then my youngest son will get it.
That -65 and the 4506 are like trusted, loyal friends. Scratch that; they're family.

Square butt, 2" M36. The same dealer had a 6 shot .32, with a round butt...love to have that now.
Had a Walther PPK/s .22, and a buddy kept ragging that I needed a centerfire. So the swap was made, and it was many years 'till I found another Walther .22.
The 36 eventually begat an M60.

My first was a model 27-2 in 1963 8 3/8" Target Hammer and Trigger. Still have it and the Original Blue 2 piece box. Next was a Texas Ranger with knife in 1973 (Model 19-3) still unfired in wood case. Lost the box for the revolver, but have the box for the Knife and Sheath.

My very first was a S&W No.2 Army .32RF. Purchased by Parents as a gift for me. Still have it. Lettered, in 1980s, to 1863 and has the Factory rework Star on butt.

model 19 texas ranger commemorative with knife and display case. got it when i was in the army stationed in san antonio. i thought it was too pretty to shoot and sold it to a local guy before i left texas.
my next one was the J frame model 43 airweight 22 kit gun. still have it and it is one of my favorites that i will never let go.

In 1971, while living in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I was 22 and owned 3 long guns...30-06, 12 gauge, and a 22 Hornet. Decided I needed a .22 and my first handgun. Went to the local Coast-to-Coast hardware store in L'Anse and saw a new Model 17-3 that satisfied both "needs." As I was making $3.08 an hour and just married, I asked about time payments if I put half down. He said OK and "Take it and pay me when you get it." Those were different times! Working in the woods, it became my most used and carried (again, different times) firearm.
Side note: Soon after getting married, the new wife asked "Why do you need all those guns(3)?" I said "Same reason you need all those pots and pans...different tools for different jobs." Subject never came up again and 43 years later I still had the same wife and Model 17.

Read an article on the Model 39 S & W about 30 years ago & went looking for one. Found a Model 639 instead - The 39 in stainless. Still have it & still enjoy it. Never a malfunction in all those years.
