In the September AARP Bulletin (you all read it, right?), there is a chart showing the percentage of adults who owned guns in 2013, by state. Not surprisingly, Alaska leads with 61.7%, and the usual suspects, New York and the other New England states bring up the rear. But what's the deal with last-place Delaware? Only 5.2% of its residents owned guns in 2013. Can anyone who is familiar with Delaware offer a reason? Even gun-hating California has a 20% ownership rate. My own state, gun-friendly Texas, shows a surprisingly mediocre 35.7% rate. Surely we're doing better than that by now.

I've attached a scan of the chart below. (Please forgive the crease.)

These surveys must always be taken with a grain of salt. Or mebbe a 25 pound bag of salt. Most folks who visit this site own guns and want to keep their guns. If they get a phone call from someone claiming to be doing a survey on firearms ownership, do you think they would answer the questions asked honestly?

"What??...... sorry ...I don't have time right now to do a survey"......"click"

Delaware has under a million people. My city, which is only 30 min from Delaware, has more people than the state of Delaware. They don't even have a sales tax

Well not having a sales tax is a good thing. As far as ranges..they have a good rifle range or two. It is not really wall to wall people ya know. except in the northern area up near Philthydelphia down to about Middletown. I have quite a few friends and family that live in Delaware. The gun ownership is definitely higher than that figure...but it is shotgun country ya know

We lived in Delaware for three years back in the late 80s...Total population at that time was under 700k....most of it centered around Wilmington. ...liberal in the north, where the population was centered....rural south and very liberal at the beaches....I only knew of 2 gun stores in the entire southern half of the state.. very little public land for hunting, and private land and leases mostly for the wealthy...adds up to fewer real opportunities for recreational use of guns.

A whole bag of salt is right. :D

Does it account for legal ownership only?

As for Delaware, at least we know Joe Biden has his shotgun. :o

Well to put things (hopefully) in perspective. I am a life time resident of the people’s republic of New York. I’m now happily long retired from a large construction local union in Albany vicinity. (About a 1,000 active and retirees) I know a lot of those people and contrary to the twist on things most member appear to be pro-gun, we have very many hunters and just gun owners in the mix, and meting members of other construction unions at job sites it appears most are gun people. (Most union LEADERS do espouse a different philosophy and they get all the air and print time)

When I lived in Albany I was a member of a 1,500 person gun club and a couple smaller clubs. Contrary to a lot of published hog wash there are many more gun owners in my state!

As far as polls go or statistics compiled a lot depends on who you ask, how you ask and where you ask it. Rest assured a poll taker can prove out anything they want, mostly done to please whoever paid for the info.

Im sure that % isn't accurate but I have no problem believing that Texas is under 50%. Texas has 27 something million people. Not everyone owns guns. Heck, Texas isn't even the most gun friendly state. There's a lot of misconception about Texas

A couple years ago there was a list of all states by percentage of adults with carry permits. Texas was in the lower half. The numbers were from states published data, not a poll.

If polling methodology on gun ownership was consistent over a period of years, I think there'd be a reliable trend in whatever direction that might be. But I believe gun ownership would be underreported across the board simply due to reluctance of those being polled to reveal they own a gun.

Agreed, in fact there are enough gun owners in NY to ensure Hillary/Obama and Cuomo should have never been elected. Unfortunately, that ain't the case.

Lots of gun owners in NY that love to vote democrat. Simply amazing to me.
