Learned on the morning news that he started by singing to patients in a hospital where he worked, noticed his talent and you know the rest. Did not know that.

Have Mercy, Percy!!

One of the greatest music icons of my High School years.
When a Man Loves a Woman!

Spent several wonderful sessions in the back seat of a 62 Ford Fairlane 500 with that song playing softly on a scratchy Eight Track tape, followed by The Temptations with 'My Girl.'

RIP

He born and raised right here in Colbert County, Alabama, just a few minutes from where I sit typing this at home now. He indeed sang to patients at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield, and was very instrumental to putting my town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama on the music map as one of the great, all time places to record. Watch the documentary "Muscle Shoals", which is on DVD, and you will realize how HUGE this area was to the development of good, 'ole greasy R&B in the Sixties and Seventies. RIP, Mr. Sledge.
