Hey guys, so I bought one that was keeping me awake at night. It's a performance center 40 recon. It's in great shape with 2 factory mags. But no aluminum case. I paid 700 shipped . And the only reason I paid that much is because scsw labels it as an enhanced version of the "shorty 40" with compensated match grade barrel. Looks to an awesome gun. Scsw does not however give production numbers. I was reading somewhere that less than 600 were made?.. did I do ok on price?.. also can I find an aluminum performance center case anywhere?.. as always thanks for any help guys..wm_14429303.jpg

It is in fact a rare piece... and you got a heck of a deal on her... somebody should be along shortly with some more information... I guess you could say it's like an enhanced version or the Shorty.40...

Umm, well I guess you did alright. :D Nice score, that’s a great price for a great PC pistol.

I can’t help you with total production numbers.

The aluminum PC cases come up for sale from time to time. I’ve seen them here in the parts for sale area. EBay also has them every so often. Nice ones are @ 250.00-$350.00. Beat ones are cheaper of course. There seems to be at least a couple different looking ones out there. I was looking for one but decided it wasn’t worth it to me. It’s just a box and doesn’t have any information anyway, (unless it comes with the outer shipping cardboard box which wouldn’t match the serial number anyway.)

Are you sure that it originally came in an aluminum PC case? I’m not questioning but just have that question. It probably did. (?)

I assume it came in the ribbed aluminum case I saw a recon 45 for sale and it had the ribbed aluminum case. Model year on mine is 1998 and I believe the shorty 40s of that year shipped in aluminum.

I’m sure it did too, just wondering cause some of my PC examples came in their correct plastic boxes while some I’ve seen came in the aluminum ones, (945’s for instance.) Maybe different distributors? Different years?

Yes I agree, in that my 1998 Recon 45 originally came in an aluminum box. I did not get that box with it and that is the pistol I was looking for an aluminum box for.

Like you, I got it for a very low price so adding on another $250.00-$350.00 didn’t make sense. At least to me. Total would be getting close to what that “someone,” (not me,) would be able to sell it for.

Yessir I understand. If I can find one for under 200 I will prob pick it up. Seems like they are getting really good money for a bleak mediocre case

There's one on one of the big gun sale sites right now for $795 that looks identical to yours. I think you got a good buy on it for a PC model - congrats! I keep looking for a PC model, but want the box and all the goodies to go with it, and of course at a decent price. The search continues for me.

Yessir its prob the one I ordered. The original price was 795. There is a recon 9 with all the goodies on the big auction site. Starting bid is 900 I think.

Looks like that same Recon 9 is for sale on the classifieds here on the forum too.

That’s a smoking price for sure. I agree that it almost surely came in the aluminum PC case when new.

I would submit that nobody loves the true Performance Center semiautomatics more than me (we have a good group that might like ‘em as much! ;)) but at the same time, it’s my position that the aluminum case is wildly overrated.

Yup, I definitely get on board with having all original goodies, I totally get that. But the money that people throw down for the aluminum case is just unbelievable to me. I’m willing to bet that S&W paid $20 each for these. They are all made in China. I do not find either their quality nor durability to be any manner of impressive.
