I was window shopping Sunday for an auto pistol & happened on this interesting possibility. It appeared to be a DAO version of this model, cause I saw no hammer spur & the way the trigger was positioned within the guard.....well forward. I couldn't take time to talk to anyone about it but will very soon. They're asking about a thou including case & papers. As small as it was it looked like a single stack. I'm only familiar with S&W revolvers at this point, so I could use some feedback from you guys on this pistol. Thanx in advance, jd45

Shorty 40s are double stack autoloaders with the Traditional SA/DA trigger system. The hammers are bobbed since these are concealment pieces. These are Performance Center firearms and are very desirable. If the condition is good, that is a very fair price

While I do not own a Shorty 40, I do own the Shorty 357

Most of the shorties shipped with a flush fitting 9 round magazine and an extended 11 round magazine with the spacer on the bottom of it.

Did you happen to see this in Hoffman? Try to work them down on the price! If I recall it's been sitting there for a while.

fz1fan, no it's actually at G.A.T. in Dundee. I asked the guy on the phone if they'd let me shoot it since it's used & he put the phone down & came back with I'd have to come in the store & talk to the Manager about how we'd work it out, (?!) whatever THAT means. Is there also one at Cabela's? Anyway, I did plan to make them a counter offer, as I don't relish paying $1000 for it. We'll see what happens. jd45

I could have sworn I saw one at cabelas. I will look into it and let you know.

There's been a Shorty 40 2000 in the Gun Library at Hoffman Estates Cabela's for a couple months, no box/1 mag according to the listing. You never know with Cabela's whether or not the gun is still there but that's probably the one you're thinking of.

Yup, its still there. I just sent the op a pm with the link.

I was at the Firing Line in Aurora, CA, about 3+ months ago. I hate to say this, in case the pistols are not there, but I saw two Shorty's, and if I recall correctly one was a .357. The other may have been a .40 or .45? At the time I was not knowledgeable enough on the Shorty series, but I recall the prices being somewhere in the $800+ range.

I monitor GAT's inventory online on a daily basis. That one's been there since March 16. That's the longest I've seen a 1-3 gen last, but not surprising given the particular model. It's item number 168437 on their web site if anyone wants to find it.

They don't normally entertain any haggling, but I've never bought anything there for more than half that price.

They list it as SA/DA, serial number looks like KPC0254:

Smith & Wesson 4006 Shorty 40 MK III, .40 S&W - with case and instruction manual. Made in the Performance Center.

Firearm Specs
Model 4004 Shorty 40 MK III
Caliber/Ga .40 S&W
Barrel length 3-1/2 Inch
Action Semi-Auto SA/DA
Finish Matte
Sights Adjustable
Stock/Grips Plastic

I qualified today with my shorty 40 mk3 for my CCW.

First time I have shot it and words can not describe how that things shoots.

It is deadly accurate even firing single handed (what ever reason the instructor made me do that) it would group 1-2 inches and several dead on center mass shots. It kicks more in the 40 caliber especially single handed but it is the first compact I have seen that fires so smooth. That bushing makes a difference.

Today I met my shootin buddy at the Bristol, WI outdoor range & he let me fire his wife's 4006 in .40, and I must say I was duly impressed with its accuracy. Since it's all stainless the extra weight keeps the muzzle from flipping too much, but I found out it's NO cc weapon because of that, altho the Shorty just might fill the bill. jd45
