I have an opportunity to purchase a Performance Center 629-5 "Defensive Revolver." According to the S&W Collector's Guide, this model was made in 1999-2000. It looks identical to the "Blood Work" guns except this is in .44 Magnum. Has the ball detent lock-up and combat grips.

Gun is supposedly new-in-box, with all paperwork & case. Price is $1,100.

Now I have no practical need for a gun like this, but it definitely has a certain appeal.

My questions:

Does anyone know how many of these were made?
Has anyone actually shot one? How do they shoot?
How does the price sound? (I could not find any reference of this model on Gunbroker).

Finally, any holster recommendations?

Thanks for any info you can share on this unique revolver!

Yes, I've got a holster recommendation. Do a search for Saguaro Gunleather on the net. Send Tom Dyer there an email and tell him what you want. Tom makes custom horse tack and holsters.

I've got several holsters he made for me and they are great. This one pictured below will fit my 629 2.5" .44, my 627-PC Blood work, and my 2.5" custom Colt New Service 1917. The Mercury dimes are Chicago screws that can you can tighten or loosen to get the retention tension you want.

Awesome holster! Thanks for the info. That looks like just the ticket!

SmithNut,

Thanks for posting that flyer. Do you have any idea how many of these were made in .44 mag?

There seems to be more info on the .357 version. I did a search here and apparently there were about 300 of the .357 mag snubs made.

I am extrapolating then that maybe 300 .44 mags were made?

Really don't know....

i8mtm,
I've never seen anything in print on the quantity made, but it has to be a few hundred at the most.

FYI - they also made them in the 41 Mag chambering, the M657 Defensive Revolver. If you find all three, that would be quite the trifecta....

Heck, here's the flyer for the M627 Defensive Revolver, aka - the Bloodwork gun.

What would a brand, spankin' new .44 Magnum Defensive Revolver as shown in the Lew Horton Product Profile that SmithNut so kindly shared be worth?

Brand new - with the case and paperwork?

Figure $1,000 on the low end. Maybe $1200 offer. High End? If you just *have* to have one...maybe $1,500?

That is based on what I have seen and read about. Your mileage may vary....

For the record, I consider both of those two of my "grail" guns and would give a considerable amount more to get either. Take it and run. If you don't want it, buy it for the asking price, send me a note and you'll make a decent profit!:D

Does anyone know what the suggested retail price from Lew Horton was?

Fellas i had one of these revolvers imported here into Austalia back in 2000 , i beleive only 300 were made , according to SCSW , unfortunatley there are only 299 left as the one i had was handed in to the police in a government buyback in 2003 and crushed, i still have the case and paperwork etc.It was a hell of a gun and handfull to shoot but i did enjoy it while i had it.

OMG! That is the most depressing post I have read on this board!

If you don't mind my asking, how is it that the people of Australia just went along with that insanity? I know it is a fact that they killed the *real* "Crocodile Dundee" when he refused to turn his guns in.

God help us if they try that here in the USA. It will not be pretty.
