I am starting to look around for one of these guns, or maybe one of each. SCSW says that the only real difference is that the 952-1 has the grip safety. But I thought that the -1 had etched markings on the slide whereas the -0 did not. Can someone confirm this? Also, were they packaged the same - aluminum PC box.

Finally, does the 952-2 only come with a cardboard box and a PC gun rug??

Here are the markings and case the original 952 came with. No grip safety.

I'm sure someone will be along with a 952-1 for comparison.

Joe

Hi Joe - Hope all is well. Great looking 952. Just what I am looking for! (Hint hint!)

Can you tell me what the words are right under "SMITH & WESSON" on the right side of the slide?? Looks like..."Springfield, Mass, USA"???

Ted, I dont have any time behind a 952, but in my opinion the silly safeties on the -1 and others are unnecessary, especially in these target pistols.

I dont think Joe will take the hint.

good luck on your search.

I agree 100% with CQB. The additional safeties found on the -1s and -2s are silly. In my humble opinion, if you can find a 952 "no dash" for a price you are comfortable with, grab it.

...and here's the 952-1:

It came with the aluminum case. And, contrary to the above post, the dash-one model does have the grip safety. Only the straight/original 952 model does not.

James,

If you still have that wasteful alum box and would like to get rid of it.. let me know..

In looking around, I have noticed a 952-1, with the same slide markings as JowHatley's 952.

What do you think of that? Transitional model?

Cool coincidence. Any idea where our 08XX models stand in the production number for the dash-one (i.e. are these early-, mid-, or late-model dash-ones)?

AT-home-daddy: I can only make a guess. I bought mine 12-06 and the owner said he had it for 2.5 years. The 952-1 was released during 03 so just going by those dates I would have to say early# but no later than mid#.

My point is, what's the point of shipping a gun in such a nice box that is put away afterwards in storage. I'm not impressed with a fancy aluminum engraved box, just ship it in a plain foam padded plastic container. That container probably added to the overall total price of an already expensive gun. I'll keep it only because it is part of the gun and when she is up for sale, which won't be soon if ever.

Oh I hear ya.. I am getting a PC gun.. but it don't have that fancy box..

Yet when people don't get a premium box with a premium gun, they complain about that, too. I've lost count over how many theads I've read where some folks complain about Baer shipping their 1911s in a cardboard box. With some people, you just can't win. S&W probably figures they're playing it safe...and they're probably right.

It is funny I only got the cardboard box and PC gunrug with mine. I would have liked to receive the aluminum box.

Pete,
Hows it going buddy
The first 350-400 of the dash -1 s had the early markings similar to the no dash
They then went to the stampings
952s came in the first aluminum case, the rug, and then the newest aluminum case.
It all depends on time of production
