Another forum member recently ran up a large vet bill getting his dog cured. He advised me to take out pet insurance. I've looked into it and it is a can of worms.

I've found about eight carriers. What seems to be the highest rated one doesn't cover well care. Most have $250 deductible and then reimburse 80% of paid bills. User comments are all over the place.

Has anyone one had good or bad experiences and with what companies?

We have 3 Maine Coon Cats (all between 10 -13 years old now) and we have them all insured with Trupiaion. That works well for us, different insurance companies all have their own MOs. Get what works the best for you. Only you can make that decision!

We had other cats with other companies in the past but have all on Trupiaon now

Trupanion

I've heard a lot of good things about Trupanion.

We've lost two wonderful dogs to cancer much too soon. Had no insurance, but were able to pay for the treatment needed (though the end result were not what we had hoped for).

With our latest dog we started out with Pet Insurance, Purina, I think, and they changed to some other name. We had some irritating things happen dealing with their agents and dropped them. We throw $50 per month for the dog and $20 for the rescued cat into savings and plan to see how that works out if the money is needed. Pretty good chunk saved up as it's been almost 6 years now.

I'm still considering it. The one through the Human Society goes up as the pet ages. I just did the quote for Trupanion and for my 4 year old Rottie it is 132 bucks a month, with a 250 dollar deductible and 90 percent reimbursement. I didn't read the fine print, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went up too.

Man, my Dad would have lost his mind at the idea of pet insurance. He loved his dogs, but once they got sick they all went "to the farm". I asked him when I was grown up where this wonderful farm was, and he just laughed and made the gun sign with his fingers.

We’ve had very good luck with Nationwide, which used to be VPI.
Last premium for our 12 year old golden retriever was about $900 per year. Nearly every year our reimbursements have exceeded the premiums, some years the excess was considerable.
We found it best to get a puppy covered quickly before anything develops which could be considered a pre-existing condition.

I've never had pet insurance. Always got over vet bills by not eating or going anywhere for a few weeks.
