Pic Request - Model 69 Grips

I have a 4.25" model 69. I love the gun and it's a great shooter, but I can't find a set if grips that look and feel good. To me, rb grips look goofy on a 4" or longer gun. And, I want something with some decent size to fill out my hands and help manage recoil. So, any suggestions? Pics are a bonus!!

Hello!

I do not have a Model 69 4", but if I did I would take the Jerry Miculek approach and get the X frame grips to put on them. It converts to a SB and puts a cushion over the backstrap.

Crh1943 has a great answer. I have the identical 69 and I love it, but I have small hands and use the Hogue RB rubber, which would not suit your purpose.

I recently ordered a set of Eagle Heritage grips for a 4" Mod 57 Mountain Gun. I too think that round butts look strange on anything other than short barreled revolvers. The Eagle's fit the bill perfectly! They took about 5 weeks to get, which isn't much at all in terms of made to order grips. I went with the standard grade Rosewood without medallions.

I have the 2.75" Mod 69 and put Pachmayr compat grips on it. Very concealable and comfortable to shoot full power loads. Pic is not my gun but pretty much looks exactly like it.

I bought a 69 with a 4 inch barrel right after they came out and really like it. I tried the original grips, put on some Hogue X frame grips, tried some Packmayr Diamond Pros and went back to the X grips. They are square butt, large enough to get a good grip on, fit my hands well and do a good job of absorbing recoil. The link points to the S&W store but they are available from other places as well.

My only complaint is they might be a little too big. They are great at the range but if you are carrying your gun they can be a bit much. The best of both worlds maybe the 500 grips sanded down a little. In this thread one of the posters shows what sanded down 500 grips looks like. I keep meaning to give that a try but have not gotten around to it.

I own a 2 3/4 inch model 69. Though ugly, the RB rubber factory grips work fairly well for me. I tried a set of RB to SB conversion grips I had around (Ahrends wood target), and found they did not handle full power loads well for me. Too much "sting" in the recoil. Went back to the factory RB rubbers.

In your case, I would second Crh1943's recommendation and try a pair of X frame grips. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but they do work well, and though RB, they present a SB appearance. Several members have posted pairs they have re-shaped to their satisfaction with sandpaper.

If you have problems getting a good fit and don't care for Pach's
Get Harett or other grips that you send a drawing of your hand to.
Is some what spendy but will save you in the long run ....

I have a set on my 6 1/2" 24. They are perfect for that gun.

I really like these VZ's on my 2.75 inch 69, but they might be a little small for a 4.25 inch gun.

Like I stated earlier here is my 69 with the RB Hogues, but they do make a Hogue round to square which is a meatier, larger grip.

My first vote will usually be Ahrends. Though out of production, they can be found. I keep grips if a revolver gets adopted out and try to stay a couple of sets ahead,,, just in case.
I bought this pair of stained Maple to complement the black bits on the 69. "L" frame .44 mag,, what's not to like?. S/B FG on 4" & up, R/B FG on under 4". They just fit me . Your milage may vary

I've tried several grips on my 4.25" M69 including the Hogue x frame grips which is best for taming recoil. I finally decided not to shoot heavy loads and go with what looks best. I try to get as close as possible to what I think is the perfect round for the M69, 240 grains @ 1000 FPS. You can get close to that in either 44 Mag or 44 special.

Sorry I don't have a picture but my M69 currently wears Altamont round Conversion 'Coke Bottle' Target American Walnut grips.

I try to get as close as possible to what I think is the perfect round for the M69, 240 grains @ 1000 FPS.

I am sticking with the X grips but I agree about that power level in a M69. Strong enough to be interesting but not so punishing I want to quit after a cylinder or two. I quit reloading but Georgia-Arms sells a load that lists a 240 grain FMJ at 1000 fps and it is my favorite ammo for that gun.

I agree. I typically shoot "skeeter loads" or a 240gr powder coated bullet at around 1100fps. That's about the top end of the comfortable range for the model 69.
