Picked up a 19-5

Picked this up today. Came with box, paper work, and tools.

I didn't look close enough at the right side plate before I brought it home. Has an odd line in the blue.
Could it have been from an odd set of grips at one time?

The S&W book says early 80's for a birth date? How can I better narrow down a date of manufacture in the future without asking here?

Also what are the 'features' as indicated on the box? Could not find that in the S&W book.
What does the 'Spec Ord' mean? And what does the 524 in the upper left mean?

Definitely some inconsistencies with the finish and the yoke retention screw head appears to be quite high in relation to the side plate.

Not a bad revolver! I carried a similar one when I wore a badge.

You will need someone wiser than I to interpret the box label. I can find the barrel length, Model number and serial number. Not much beyond that. As for manufacturing date, the best I can suggest is to join the S&W Collectors Association. Once a member, you can request one shipping date per week.

That should be marked a "-6" and has the 'new' spring loaded yoke screw.

Unless it is a Special Order, that is usually a Julian Date code for when it was entered into their inventory. In this case, Nov 15, 1990.
No idea. I have read a theory that it may just be the 524th label printed on that day.

I suppose you could just “letter” the gun, unless you think your S&W accumulation lettering costs exceed the cost of joining the SWCA. Would you mind my asking approximately how much you paid for the gun? Of the hundreds of guns S&W sells I don’t have a M19 example, which I have been thinking about buying for my next revolver. ( I’m not a collector but I’d like an example of some popular guns S&W makes/made).

That's because it is the wrong screw, my 19-5 the screw heads are the same size counter sunk flush.

DuneShoot. Check the model marking in the yoke cut. It's stamped 'MOD. 19-5', not -6?

I would say that the "Line" on the side plate is from long term storage.
I think?? the wax paper covered over this partially and caused this line??
Flitz would probably blend in the line..Bill.

PS: the line is too high for a grip panel to cover..

Congratulations and welcome to the 19-5 family. I’ve got one I received as a gift in the late 80s. Still have the box, papers a d original grips. Mine does not have the red ramp insert.

A potential problem here........the threaded part of the -6 yoke screw is larger diameter than the threaded part of the -5 yoke screw.

No, I've never seen the new spring loaded screw I guess from a 19-6. I have a 19-4 and a 19-5 and the screws are the same size and flush with the side plate surface like my19-4

Great catch, it is a -6!
For some reason I never looked and took the gun shop's word for it. This is the 1st time i have not looked!
