Today, I came home with a new-to-me Smith & Wesson 686 no dash 4" model with factory wood grips. I probably paid too much at $486 out the door, but most I have seen in about the same condition on TexasGunTrader are listed for around the same price. Prices only go up from what I have seen from. I know the older Smiths are well regarded. This one had some wear on the outside, but the bore and crown were clean. Trigger is crazy smooth in double action and the single action is sick. I got it home and cleaned it up as best I could. All in all, any issues with it were purely cosmetic and minor for the most part. I have owned a couple of newer Smiths and various Rugers and ended up selling them all. This one I will keep.

Some slight wear in the front on the yoke hinge.

Some light scratches on the right side.

The worst blem is a rough spot to the touch along the back of the frame.

Cylinder face is pretty clean as was the area around the forcing cone.

Bore was bright and shiny. Crown and front of barrel have what look to be carbon stains, but there were no dents, gouging, or damage of any kind.

Just wanted to share.

RU kidding? I saw one ANIB today for $850. Stainless guns in Florida are priced CRAZY! Prices can only go up. Good luck with yours!

I'll admit I didn't do any research on the going rate before buying. I had seen a couple on the shelf earlier this week. I popped in day before yesterday and saw there were three. Yesterday, they were back to two. I bought the better of the two. The one I left on the shelf was in about the same condition except for the grips which were much worse off.

I have a feeling it won't be the only pre-lock Smith I buy.

I picked one up a few months ago from a co-worker for $400, it was the deal of the year for me, shortly after I was offered double for it but I kept it.

See, that would have been closer to what I would have preferred to pay. In any case, I have no regrets. It is a nice revolver to be sure. I don't know how many rounds have been through it is the only thing. Judging from the trigger, you would think it was well broken in. I have read that the older Smith triggers are awesome, though, so that could just be the way it is.

Sir,

I would encourage you to be thankful for that deal. I would say that you would not get a price like that, on a gun like that, nearly anywhere else in the country(there are a number of exceptions I'm sure, but still not a significant percentage). Finding a used Smith, even with a few scratches as yours has, for under $500 is quickly becoming a thing of the past. In my neck of the woods used Smith revolvers are hard to find at all. Texas is obviously blessed.

Congratulations,
Andy

Six months ago I traded into a 6" Model 686 (no dash, no M) that was in about the same condition give or take, but totally lacking grips. This was a "friends and family" deal and it still cost me $650 in trade! I would say you did extremely well. Enjoy it.

That was a great find at a terrific price. Look around at what they're going for, and you'll become absolutely giddy at what you paid. Enjoy it.

I wish deals like that would come my way and as said earlier you can clean up those scratches pretty good , congrats on the buy .

Well, you guys are making me feel a lot better about this deal. I'm fighting the urge to go back and see if the other one is still on the shelf. It would probably look good in some Hogues...

Stainless cleans up nicely. As someone already said a gray Scotch-bright pad (finest grade) on that area around the trigger. But back it up with a block of wood.

I would be a happy camper with the deal you got. Hope you enjoy it.

Joe

Great buy

I was very lucky to find one I paid $300.00 for mine the gun was only fired 6 rounds when I got it a few months ago, I checked with s&w for the mod and date 1985. I sent mine back they fixed it on their dime came back in perfect condition they even cleaned it after test firing attached pic of before and after polish and grip job. Check for the M around the serial number. Congrats on a great buy.
fyi-I used Mothers Mag Polish on mine.

I could have written the above quote for my 4" 686-2.

I'm a beginner to shooting, and this 686-2 I now own is my first revolver. I am sure you will like this Smith as much as I... I was just at the range last Saturday, and proudly using the second batch of rounds I re-loaded. Way fun...

Congratulations!
