Last week I posted a question about the value of a 686 I was going to look at. The agreement seemed to be that a $600 asking price for a 4 inch 686 in nice condition was reasonable. The seller was the 2nd owner and had fired it very little. There were 94 rounds of 357 and 44 rounds of 38spcl included in the deal.
I ended up giving the seller $575 for the gun and ammo. It is a no dash with M stamp. It came with these Pachmayr presentation grips installed and the seller didn't have the originals. I was able to get out between snow storms and extreme cold temps and fire 24 rounds through it, all were 357. I have small hands and the grips are gonna have to go, but other than that its a nice shooting gun.

The 15 minutes I had it out for a brief shoot was just a teaser. I cant wait to try her again. Its supposed to be clear up to 27 degrees tomorrow so I may have to head out to my favorite plinking spot to shoot it some more.

Jonsey, I just took possession of a 686-2 I bought from a friend and co-worker, and I love it to pieces.

Congrats. You too will love it.

Wow, that is a major score when you consider the gun and the ammo. The 686 is one of if not the finest revolver S&W ever put together. Well done you will enjoy many years or even decades of shooting, I don't think anyone has ever worn out a 686. Shoot, reload, and repeat over and over and .............................

I know how you feel about shooting outdoors in the winter. It barely got up to 70 degrees today. No way I can handle that. Gonna throw an extra comforter on the bed. You did well on the gun. For your next 686, offer $500 and tell them to throw in the ammo.

Oh, and don't let anyone tell you that you got a bad deal by not getting the original grips. The rubber grips were designed to allow folks to shoot mags all day without discomfort. Congrats on your great gun.

Will you please negotiate my next firearm purchase? :)

I never get any deals on guns down here in Delaware. Then again i only buy new because i don't knows guns that good. All i know is pull the trigger and try to hit the bulls eye. That 686 you bought is a great gun. Did i hear something about a LOCK !! ???

You mentioned you have small hands and the grips have to go. Usually...it's the other way around and folks want larger grips. I don't necessarily have small hands, but I like to "feel" the gun myself. You can pick-up a set of nice Magna (service grips) as pictured on the 681 shown at the bottom or even the combat grips shown on the 617 in the middle. The target style shown on the 686 at the top would also likely be too large for your hands. These come in either round or square butt configurations.

Bantam also makes a smallish rubber grip as well.

First congratulations on a great purchase on a wonderful revolver. I would be inclined to take it to a gun show and try a few sets of stocks on to see how they fit my hand. Most dealers will have no problem with you putting them on your gun so you can see how they feel.

Mine

This is my 686 before and after polish and grip job. Congrats on a great purchase.:D
