Picked up a Model 17

Thanks for posting the pic of the grips! They look similar to the Goncalo Alves grips to me, (maybe a little more eye appeal than mine), but I look forward to the real experts opinion.

I only asked because I am working hard to atone for a couple decades of slapping whatever feels good in the hand and at the range on a few S&W revolvers... :D

K.22 is first S&W I ever bought, liked it so well I bought another In case I wore it out. The others just kind of showed up.
So... is envy an acceptable emotion in this case?;)

(Happy New Year!)

I got my 17-3 about 11 years ago and my 34-2 (in box with papers & tools) about 4 years ago. I've had a 422 for about 20-25 years but SWMBO uses it now (I sacrificed it to protect the 17 & 34!) Now you know what a "Protection Gun" is!

Hammer on Bottom M-17

You won't go wrong with a K22.

I have to ask. What kind of hammer is on the M-17 on the bottom? It looks like a standard, non-target hammer, but the spur is bent upward. It has a pleasing shape that looks functional? Did you have it modified or am I just ignorant of a third kind of S&W hammer?

I've had a few pre-17s that have ended up in the hands of other members here. I currently have a four screw 17 that is a "birth year" gun for me. Bought from another form member. No plans on selling that one. Every S&W fan needs at least one K-22. Congratulations on a nice acquisition.

Interesting stocks! could we see the butt or close up to confirm rosewood? I've broken clay pigeons at 100 yards with my 17-4 rested on sand bags on the hood of the truck. Took a couple warm ups to get the Kentucky windage, but, there it was!

Peak53, some years back, I tried that with my 649 Bodyguard .38 Special snubby. Was using some wadcutter handloads that I made. I actually hit a few! Talk about Kentucky windage!

G-Mac - Well, that's a feat with a snubby that I wouldn't try to replicate. I think that this goes to show that .22 LR is unbelievably accurate when held where it needs to be held, given a quality firearm.

The hammer on the 17 is called a Speed Hammer. They were available from S&W at one time for the post war revolvers. You will hear it referred to as a fish hook, but that is just wrong.
