I would need your help; if somebody has S&W Model 617, would you please make a nice snapshot of the barrel muzzle, as perpendicular as possible. Something similar to the photo attached.

I came to conclusion that I need a nice DA revolver in 22LR, and consider Model 617, 6", as a my best bang for the buck. But, there is one big problem, at least for me; that thing is so heavy, heavier than 686, 6".

In order to see what could be done regarding milling off some steel from the barrel, I would like to build solid model of existing barrel on 617, modify it, and see could that be done.

Thanks!

Simply machine it to be like a Model 617 Mountain Gun,,

I have a 4-in and a 6-in model 617, and I like them just fine. But if I were in your shoes I would look for a model 17 or 18. I would certainly try that before I would do any gunsmithing on a 617.

617 PC low profile barrel

Possible modification

NED, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

BTW, did you consider countersinking muzzle side of the bore, to prevent nicking the edge?

I would like to have same profile of 6" barrel on 617 as on your Mountain Gun.

I wish the same on 6" 686. Just sold one 686-3. It locked cylinder rock solid, top condition. However, its 45 oz is more than I want. For that weight I would rather carry M629 6" or Ruger SBH 5.5"

Here's a couple of 686-4's with modified barrels and a 617 no dash with an NOS 4" no lug barrel installed. Get a new 617 barrel and get it modified and installed on you gun. Just note that new Smith barrels have large forcing cones.

It's probably a stupid question, but you want to buy a 617 6" and then shorten the barrel? Why not just buy a 617 4"? And if weight is such an issue, why not go with a 63 or even a 317?

Well, I like 6" barrel revolvers.

Lighter barrel, if made from original 6" 617 barrel. Modified barrel as per picture will be lighter whooping 250 grams (8.8 oz). This revolver will be delight to carry and shoot.

If I can only find somebody to mill the barrel...

Find a model 17 no-lug barrel. Have it hard chrome plated. Will have a similar appearance to the stainless frame but not exact. Will give you the weight/balance you are looking for.
