I don't own a commemorative but my favorite LEO gun is this 19-4 which lettered as 1 of 50 shipped to the U.S. Dept. of State in early 1980 following the Iran hostage crisis.

Boy I would have liked to have had one to pair with the below! Its not a special edition, but one of 7000 shipped to the Shah. No import marks, how many made it back to the states?

Would an agency's name stamped in block letters on the frame below the cylinder be considered any kind of "Special Edition" or simply a special order?

Is this kind of stamping usually done by S&W or by the agency's armorer?

Any enhancement of value?

I'm not usually one for fancy fahr-ahrms but some of those in this thread brought serious :droolage:

If you could provide a picture or an example it may be easier to give an opinion on whether the markings are factory or PD.

I believe in most instances a PD marking diminishes the value slightly unless a collector of a certain agencies firearms is interested.

Louisville Police Dept. 175th Anniversary

This is my only comemmorative. S&W 66-2. It has been fired, but very little. Born and raised in Louisville and thought this would be a great addition to my small group of S&W revolvers.

One of my favorites is my Deluxe Texas Ranger. I love the look of this engraved model 19

The Kansas Highway Patrol 586 has a GREAT badge on the side plate along with some engraving, probably class D coverage.

The FBI model 27

Here is the US Treasury Bicentennial 686

The US Secret Service centennial model 19

Another model 19. This one is the US Customs Patrol 125 anniversary revolver

The Cook County Sheriff's Office chose the model 65 for their 150th birthday

The Chicago PD used the model 66 for their 125th year celebration

This model 66 was produced for the Missouri Highway Patrol's 50th anniversary.

The model 10 was the choice of the Ohio Highway Patrol for their 40th anniversary

This model 19 was produced for Detroit's Renaissance in 1978

The 60th anniversary of the Washington State Patrol was celebrated with the production of this model 28

Not to sure if we are calling this a commemorative or not. This model 36 was produced with the Texas Hold'em theme

The model 745 was used to commemorate the 10th anniversary of IPSC

What a beautiful collection of firearms artwork! It's people like Doc44 and you whose dedication to S&W collecting convinced me to join the S&WCA.

How anyone can see all these representations of the gun makers art and not drool all over them is beyond me.

Some people are critical of guns like these. They don't seem to realize they represent a special meaning to their owners far beyond being "just another firearm."

Specialty firearms collections like yours can give us a chance to see many of the nicest examples in one place. We can admire not only their function but how they can be a beautiful mechanical art form as well.

I hope to be at the S&WCA meet in Idaho next year. Maybe we'll get a chance to see your wonderful collection in person....

You guys have some really nice limited editions. I will first make it clear that I do not collect commemorative guns, knives, cars or wines. But I mean no disrespect to those that do. That said I am posting is one from the other end of the scale. A 1981 100th anniversary Commemorative of the L.A. Police Revolver and Athletic Club. I bought this baby from its original buyer as a "player to be named later" as a part of a deal for a Registered 357 Magnum. I was and am pleased with the RM by the way.

I have held this gun for investment. Believe me it has been buried in my safe since 1983 and I only take it out now to share it with you on this thread. In doing so I was shocked to see the gold leaf has all but disapeared. This gun has never been handled and has not seen the light of day. What caused this I have no idea. Do you think the Factory will replace the gold leaf? This gun may become a shooter yet.

Here it is with the original sales brochure and packing box, which I have carefully kept to enhance the anticipated growing value of this rare gun.

TDC - I stumbled across a NIB 125th anniversary 25-3 just like yours at one of my local gun shops. I guess it doesn't matter what I paid for it because it was worth every penny to me. Sorry no pics but it looks just like yours. That sure is a big box to fit everything in separately

OCSD gun

this is my orange county sheriffs dept 686 pistol that the man told me it was given to him by the department upon retirement and 757 was his badge #. his story not mine. pistol is extremely accurate for a 4 incher.
