"Up until around the mid-80s, ALL S&W barrels had a pin going through the frame at the top that mated to a notch in the barrel. It kept the barrel from unscrewing. Now days, they are just 'crush' fit "
Actually, the barrel pin revision was made in 1980 I believe. The fact of the matter is that all barrels, whether pinned or not are "crush" fit. The pinned barrels are not just screwed into the frame hand tight and then the pin is installed. I think the pinned barrels thread into the frame and are hand tight 60 degrees before the reach their final vertical position. Hand tight means that the components cannot be tightened by hand any further. Then wrenches are used to move everything into it's final position.
