Can anyone help me with production date nd any info on my dads gun Serial number is 372096 small Pistol that splits and has five shots it’s silver in color

Welcome to the Forum. There's a sticky above that tells what info. is needed for us to give you correct aswers to your question. 1st what is the caliber of your gun? .32 , .38, .44 or ? ( probably 38S&W - not .38 Special. ) Are you sure it's a Smith&Wesson? What is the exact stamping on top of the barrel rib? Is the hammer exposed ? Ed

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! The caliber is not often stamped on the old top breaks. So, if you are unfamiliar with guns as it appears, your best course of action is to post pictures of your gun from all sides. The serial number is located on the bottom of the gun butt. Some of the older fonts may make a 1 or 7 look like T.

It appears you have a .38 Double Action, 4th Model from the late 1890's.

Very subjective not knowing the condition, the book puts it at $85 poor condition to $1200 anib, so somewhere in the middle on a scale of 1 to 8 I would guess, prices are crazy right now, but the 38 S&W (not special) is an old round that most aside from collectors are not interested in.
Is it an heirloom or a chunk of metal you don't know what to do with?

For some unknown reason I have become a big fan of the 38 S&W loadings. Like me, out of date However, I have some seven revolvers in that loading including my birth year gun from 1944. I am always on the look out for one that works and carry one fishing as well as I load snake shot in them also. Dont want to harm harmless snakes, but Copperheads are born with a attitude and this year in Virginia they are abundant as the Kadiedids (SP?) are coming out after a 17 years rest underground. 
By the way Ive never heard of that pictured ammo?? Where from Ca. ??
