Read about an Air Force commendation for the heroic work five years ago, of some members of the NY Air National Guard who were stationed at a small airfield near my former home.

After a shipboard explosion and fire, foreign merchant seamen were critically injured and dying in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Emergency medical care was necessary if they were going to survive, but being1500 miles from shore meant medevac was beyond reach.

Beyond the scope of any rescue mission they'd ever conceived, an all-volunteer group of Air Force specialists pulled together at a moments notice, and bet their lives on their training.

Courage and perseverance would see this hastily gathered group hurl themselves off a plane, in the dark, at low altitude, into heavy seas, without any possibility of help if anything went wrong. "That others may live".

That's one thing you can always count on in this country. There's always those who will accept the challenge and make the commitment for those in need. Military, LEO, Fire, EMTs and everyday civilians will go above and beyond to help them.
