Here are some Placitas, NM Wild-Feral Horses.
They roam around on Public and Private Land, often near homes, usually not this close.
The herd size is about 40, my estimate.
How bout that stump in corner.

I'm not a horse guy, but those are nice-looking horses. Are they protected, or whatever, from someone going out and trying to domesticate a pony, like on TV?
Yeah, someone did a nice job on that stump.

They're like any other wild animal, you approach at risk. Horses bite and kick at either end with surprising speed and potentially bone breaking force. Heck, some of the "domesticated" examples are none too friendly, let alone cuddly.

My dad had a gelding that was totally unpredictable. For whatever reason it would spook when we worked around it. It tossed my dad a couple times, and he finally decided he was getting a bit too old to be thrown and sold the horse.

Did any of you see the horse try to kick the jockey at the Preakness?

It's my belief or theory that all horses instinctively
hate humans. They know humans want to get
on their backs, shove things in their mouths and
nail things to their feet.

Given a chance most horses will at least once
take revenge on humans.

Did any of you see the horse try to kick the jockey at the Preakness?

No, didn't see it, but a thoroughbred horse owner told
me years ago one of the kept secrets at race courses
and stables is the high number of injuries/deaths
among stable hands.

Thoroughbreds are particularly high strung and dangerous,
he said.

Just today an AP story bears out the dangers to
jockeys, their injuries that include being paralyzed,
the emotional toll of facing the dangers and
fear of being injured repeatedly.

I had a "tame" horse try to kick, bite, smash, me. One really hard smack with a riding crop just below the ear, and he was the best horse I ever rode. Old Jug Head. He became glue many, many years ago.

Looks like you have a different herd than we do, we have two that rotate through, about 10-12 each.
