Planning a move to Galveston Island, Texas

Now its not happening soon, more like 4-5 years from now but I have it down between Galveston Island or Virginia Beach. Ive spent alot of time in both places but Galveston is my favorite by a hair. Can anyone give me some info on home prices, job availability, preferrably in Law Enforcement (Going to school to be Sherrifs dept) just basic info, Ive only been there for vacations and would like to know more.

The hurricane Ike, a while back messed it really bad. My Uncle has worked in the city for 20 years and he tells me it will be a long time for it to get back to what it started with.
