Good job, Goony! I would only add color to the explanation of "CTG" and make this part required reading and signed off before being allowed to make their first post! I know all of us make occasional typos or even post the occasional erroneous information, but that one thing is so frequent it really gets old, and it's a waste of good bandwidth.

The key marking on any Smith & Wesson revolver is the serial number. This is located on the butt. If the gun has grips that enclose the butt, they will need to be (carefully) removed. Be sure to include any letter(s) there, as many S&W serial numbers are alphanumeric.

Jim, I've incorporated your suggestion, although I don't think I'd want to introduce much more in the way of complications to the original post.

Perhaps somebody else would want to put up a separate post in this thread showing pictures of British proof marks, Victory topstrap markings, et cetera that are often asked about.

Well, I added a poll, but being the first time I've utilized that feature, I screwed it up, and can't see any way to edit it to correct the mistake.
