Please eat plenty of Black Eyed Peas And Hog Jowl. A southern New Years Tradition! Suppose to bring good luck! Looks like we're all going to need it next year?

I've got my dried peas soaking! We'll have Black Eyed Peas and Hog Jowl, Homemade Mac & Cheese and Homemade Mashed Tatters, along with my iron skillet corn bread!

Please stay safe and most of all I hope y'all have a Healthy 2016.

Black-eyed peas with whatever ham or bacon I've got at hand, turnip greens with hot tabasco pepper/ vinegar, a center slice of Smithfield ham, and my attempt at iron-skillet cornbread (often a failure, but the birds like the crumbs).

My best to all for the new year. At least I get Friday off from the hospital, so it starts on a "positive" note for me - I get to sleep in!
 
Our tradition is Black eyed peas with a ham bone. cabbage in some form, green jello with cottage cheese and pineapple. it's all suppose to bring good luck, and the wife's has to swipe the house with a new broom to get rid of the left over bad stuff from the old year.
 
Sorry man, no BEPs for me. Haven't tried them in years, but they always tasted like burnt navy beans to me. They are right up there with yams/sweet potatoes, beets, garbonzo beans, and sushi on the short list of things I don't like.

No disrespect to anyone's culinary's preferences intended, but I can remember early New Years Days in my younger years, staring at stuff looking kinda like that while kneeling in front of a white porcellain appliance.... 😉

I plan to carry on the tradition up here, at least the hog jowls part.

Wait, I'm out of hog jowls, will bacon do?
 
The wife makes a fine black eyed pea soup with onions, jalapenos and ham hocks. Smithfield smoked ham and cast iron skillet corn bread and we're set. Happy New Year everyone.

Thanks for posting this SW. It brings back many good memories. I grew up in the mountains of SW Virginia, and Mom always made sure we had black-eyed peas and "hawg jaw" every New Year while we were growing up.

I didn't know the tradition was so widespread. I thought it was a mountain thing. Thanks for sharing. Have a happy and productive New Year!

We observe this tradition in the Rocky Mountain West as well, likely attributable to our kin what come from Kentucky. Anyways, here's this evening's repast. The blackeyes are my version of Hoppin' John, the greens are collard, the pone is Sean Brock's recipe, from his restaurant Husk in Charleston, SC. My, but that kid can cook!
