Forgive my ignorance here...I'm fairly new to revolvers...What is meant by "pinned w/ a pinned barrel"...? Does this refer to older revolvers ? I have no idea what it means...I've seen this description in some adds, and I'm curious to learn...Thanks much...

Older revolvers have a pin that prevents the barrel from rotating during use. Later versions don't have the pin, which is evedence of less workmanship. My experience is that it makes no difference, except as to value. However, my confidence in S&W increases as the age of the gun increases, so I would pick the pinned barrel over a similar condition non-pinned every time.

Here's my 28-2 with a close-up of the pin -- it's just in front of the cylinder near the top of the frame.

Barrel that is not pinned.

Although I definitely prefer the older revolvers with pinned barrels (and recessed cylinders), I think it shows improvements in the manufacturing process that they no longer needed to pin the barrels to prevent them from turning out.
