I apologize for even asking, but I'm going crazy trying to date an early Model 60 for a friend. I can't find the serial number anywhere in the Standard Catalog.

The serial number has a 1x prefix and then only three digits. Heres a couple of pics. It's pinned, but I'm not sure if it's recessed.

"1X934" is NOT the serial number. that is an assembly number used in production.

the serial number on your S&W model 60 will be on the butt end. post the first 3 characters of the serial number and we can find out an approximate manufacture date.

Okay, it's R252074. So it's a Model 60 no dash according to the catalog, the R prefix was assigned in 1969. The best I can determine is that it was produced between 1969 and before 1972.

S&W model 60 s/n R252074 was made 1979 - 1980. thats a nice 38 special you have....enjoy!!

lets see some more pictures of your snub nose.....

It's not mine, I was researching it for a friend. I have no idea how I could have screwed this up so badly.

Thank you for all the help.

This is my model 60 .38 Spl serial # R143645 and I believe I purchased it new in 1975 and carried it as a backup gun until I retired in 1992. I'll never part with it, shoots real nice tight shot group, never had any problems!
